Remembering tenor saxophone great on what would have been his 95th birthday today. A cornerstone of the hard bop era, Mobley’s warm tone, rhythmic finesse, and compositional brilliance made him one of the most distinctive and under-appreciated voices in jazz.
We’re spinning Messages, a standout 1956 release from that showcases Mobley in top form. From his lyrical take on “Little Girl Blue” to the polyrhythmic drive of “Message From the Border,” it’s a masterclass in straight-ahead jazz.
