Learning to read isn’t natural for every child. It takes explicit instruction, practice and the development of strong foundational skills. 🙌

Struggling to read doesn’t mean a child isn’t trying hard enough.

The Science of Reading is grounded in decades of research and helps us understand how children learn to read and how we can best support them.

✏️ Show, don’t tell:
“Show, don’t tell” is a simple writing strategy we use to help students add detail, depth and interest to their writing. ✏️

Rather than simply telling the reader how a character feels, students learn to show the emotion through actions, body language, sounds and details.

❌ Telling:
“Sarah was nervous.”
✅ Showing:
“Sarah wiped her sweaty hands on her jeans and checked the clock for the fifth time.”

The second sentence gives the reader clues, allowing them to work out how Sarah is feeling.

At The Ranges Learning Centre, we explicitly teach students how to develop these skills so they can move beyond simple sentences and create writing that is clear, detailed and engaging. 🙌
