This is great news for young children learning to read. They will be practising the mechanics of reading, rather than relying on guesswork. However, shared storytime is equally important. Decodable readers serve an important purpose, but cannot replace the joy of giggling or gasping over a quality picture book in developing a love of reading.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the new maths and literacy syllabus for kindergarten to year 2 focuses on basic skills and leaves no room for misinterpretation.
