A little reminder about goals.
It’s easy to get caught up in the big ones — the race result, the podium, the FTP number, the event you’ve entered, or the distance you want to ride.
But the truth is, those goals are usually built on a lot of small, unglamorous things:
• Getting out for the ride when you don’t feel like it
• Going to bed a bit earlier
• Doing the mobility work
• Riding easy when the plan says easy
• Showing up consistently week after week
I’ve got some big goals myself at the moment, and I’m constantly reminding myself that progress isn’t always obvious from one session to the next. Some days you feel strong, some days you don’t, and both are part of the process.
One thing I’ve learned through coaching and my own riding is that goals work best when they give you direction, not pressure.
It’s okay if your goal right now is simply to ride more consistently, feel stronger on the climbs, get back into training after a break, or enjoy your bike again. Those goals are just as valid as chasing a podium.
Keep the big goal in the background, but focus on the next ride, the next session, and the next small step forward. That’s usually where the real progress happens.
What’s one cycling goal you’re working towards right now?
