🌿 Wadawurrung Cultural Workshops | Week 5, Term 3🎨

Last week some of our Year 7 and Year 8 Creative Art students had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a Wadawurrung Cultural Workshop with local artist Dr Deanne Gilson.

The workshop, Wadawurrung Dja (Seasons), gave students the opportunity to explore how Wadawurrung people have lived and survived across the seasons, including the harvesting of medicine and food plants from trees and Dja (Country). 🌿

Students worked with ochres and created drawings and paintings inspired by eels and traditional eel traps, connecting culture, Country and creativity through hands-on learning. 🐟🎨

It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about and engage with Wadawurrung culture, Country and art.

A big thank you to Pauline from the Art Gallery Ballarat and Dr Deanne Gilson for sharing their knowledge, culture and artistic practice with our students. ❤️

City of Ballarat Youth Awards - Making Ripples, Making Waves! 🌊

What an incredible night at the City of Ballarat Youth Awards on Friday! The evening celebrated the outstanding achievements of young people across Ballarat, recognising their leadership, creativity, generosity and positive impact on our community.

We were incredibly proud to see so many Mount Clear College students recognised and involved throughout the evening.

👏 Amethyst was nominated for the Positive Leader Award, recognising her incredible leadership and contribution through school, Scouts and community projects, including the co-design of the City of Ballarat Youth Strategy and the Victorian Voice of Youth Finals.

🌟 Gabriela returned as a Youth Awards Ambassador after receiving the Personal Growth Award in 2025. Gabby delivered an emotional and inspiring address and was also nominated for the Positive Leader Award, recognising her selflessness, cultural pride and commitment to creating positive change.

💚 MCC Crew members Jade, Taliah, Gabby. Amalia and Stella were recognised for their work with the Live4Life Ballarat Crew, promoting mental health awareness, encouraging help-seeking and helping to reduce stigma across our school and community.

🌊 Roxy is a member of the Youth Events Team, volunteering her time alongside other young people to recognise, celebrate and amplify the achievements of Ballarat's youth. The team did an amazing job bringing this year's “Making Ripples, Making Waves” theme to life!

🎶 Gabby and Joel also entertained the crowd with their acoustic duo, helping create a fantastic atmosphere throughout the evening.

We are immensely proud of all our students who continue to make a positive impact in our school and wider community.

♟️ BAS CHESS TOURNAMENT ♟️

Well done to our Mount Clear College Chess Team who competed in last week’s BAS Chess Tournament! The tournament gave our students a great opportunity to put their chess skills to the test and compete against students from other Ballarat schools.

A special shout-out to our MCC Chess Club for their commitment and effort throughout the year. Our students have been turning up every Thursday lunchtime to play, practise and improve their skills.

It’s fantastic to see their dedication paying off and to see our students representing Mount Clear College with pride.

Today, our Year 7 and Year 9 students were provided with their NAPLAN results, giving them an opportunity to reflect on their progress, celebrate their achievements and identify areas for continued growth.

We are incredibly proud of the growth demonstrated by our Year 9 students. The results highlight the hard work and persistence of our students, alongside the dedication of our teachers who continue to challenge, support and inspire every learner.

These results are a fantastic achievement for our Year 9 cohort and are something our whole school community can celebrate.

Last week, Mount Clear College facilitated NAIDOC celebrations in recognition of NAIDOC Week (5-12 July 2026) with a range of lunchtime activities, giving students the opportunity to come together to honour the histories, cultures and achievements of First Nation peoples.

The week began with a Smoking Ceremony and Welcome to Country by Wadawurrung Traditional Owner Shannen Mennan. A Smoking Ceremony is a cultural practice which is conducted by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It involves a fire being lit, and then smothered in a medicinal mixture of leaves in order to produce a cleansing smoke. This smoke is believed to cleanse your body and spirit of sickness, negativity, and bad spirits.

The smoke itself is also said to connect us with the spirits of ancestors, inviting them into the space to greet us and watch over us.

Throughout the week, students enthusiastically participated in a variety of cultural activities, including Marngrook, a popular traditional Indigenous football game, art activities, boomerang throwing and a live musical performance by Tristan 'Pancakes' Harris and Phil Haby. These experiences encouraged learning, connection and a deeper appreciation of First Nation cultures.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the week such a success and to all our students who engaged in the activities. Together, we continue to celebrate, learn and walk together in the spirit of respect, understanding and reconciliation.

🏀 SSV Eureka Division Senior & Intermediate Basketball 🏀

What a huge day of basketball! With the competition spread across two venues, Mount Clear College entered four teams, all of whom represented the College proudly displaying determination, teamwork and outstanding sportsmanship.

🥈 Intermediate Girls – 2nd Place
🥉 Intermediate Boys – 3rd Place
4️⃣ Senior Boys B – 4th Place
5️⃣ Senior Boys A – 5th Place

Last week, our Senior Mixed Hockey Team travelled to Warrnambool to compete in the Greater Western Regional Hockey Championships.

The team put in an outstanding performance, playing with determination, teamwork and resilience throughout the day. After a hard-fought final, they finished as runners-up, narrowly going down 2–1.

We are incredibly proud of the team's commitment to training, their willingness to step outside their comfort zones and take on a new sport, and the way they represented Mount Clear College with pride and sportsmanship.

Congratulations to all players on a fantastic achievement! 🏑💙💛
