What might the study of history look like at Queenwood?

Recently, students spent two hours with Gumbaynggirr Elder and Kinchela Boys Home survivor Uncle Roger, alongside educator Dr Ari Lander, listening to lived experience and asking questions that connected historical study with testimony, place and memory.

For students, hearing directly from people whose experiences sit within the histories they study adds another dimension to evidence and interpretation. It requires close listening, thoughtful questioning and an ability to engage with complexity.

Alongside written sources and historical scholarship, encounters like these broaden the ways students can build knowledge and understand the past through human experiences.

Queenwood alumna Phoebe Tonkin appears among this year’s Archibald Prize finalists as the subject of Zoe Young’s "Phoebe at The Chelsea".

The portrait began with a family tradition. Young’s children choose someone to sit for their birthday portrait when they turn ten, and this year her daughter Lucy chose Phoebe. Lucy knew her as Cleo in H₂O: Just Add Water, while Young knew her through her performance as Frankie in Boy Swallows Universe.

Following several sittings at New York’s Hotel Chelsea, Young explored Phoebe’s ability to move between different characters and the moment of transition between the actor herself and the roles she inhabits.

It is another lens on Phoebe’s creative career defined by range, and the ability to keep moving between characters, forms and audiences.

Queenwood dancers closed the competition season at the Sydney Opera House, performing at the Sydney Eisteddfod with strong results across all three companies.

Elektra Dance Company (Years 1-2) received a Highly Commended in the Infants Dance Group section, Orion Dance Company (Years 3-6) received a Highly Commended in the Stage 3 Dance Group section, and Stella Dance Company (Years 5-6) placed first in the Stage 2/3 Musical Theatre section.

For our girls, reaching the Opera House stage was the culmination of a season spent learning choreography, refining technique and working together as an ensemble. The results recognise that preparation as much as the final performance.

Queenwood’s dance program gives young women opportunities to develop their craft from the early primary years while experiencing the discipline, collaboration and confidence that come from performing together.

Congratulations to all three companies on a memorable end to the competition season, and thank you to Raw Energy Dance Education for their continued contribution to dance at Queenwood.

Parents understandably want their daughter to form strong friendships at school, although equally important is what kind of friend she is learning to become.

School gives girls daily opportunities to develop the qualities that strong relationships ask of them. Empathy when someone else’s experience is different from their own, good judgement when situations are complicated, generosity when there is little to gain personally, and the responsibility to repair a relationship when something has gone wrong.

These experiences form part of a Queenwood education because character develops through how we act towards other people.

Learning to listen carefully, navigate disagreement, recognise another person’s needs and become someone others can rely on contributes to the kind of young woman a student becomes well beyond the classroom.

Our girls learn to work with others, respond to disappointment, develop empathy, take responsibility and remain committed when progress takes time.

Over the holidays, Queenwood fielded its largest Snowsports team to date, with Junior and Senior School students competing across four days of Interschools competition.

Conditions ranged from challenging to blue skies, with girls competing across Alpine, Skier X, Snowboard Giant Slalom, Snowboard X and Moguls. Across every event, our girls showed the resilience, sportsmanship and determination that competition asks of them.

Strong individual and team performances included:
• Indiana Grist (Year 12): 2nd in both Division 1 Alpine events
• Division 1 Alpine Team: 2nd
• Division 1 Skier X Team: 2nd
• Emma Fan (Year 7): podium finish in Division 3 Snowboard Giant Slalom
• Division 4 Snowboard X Team: 3rd

A number of Queenwood athletes have also qualified for the SUBARU NSW/ACT/QLD State Championships.

Thank you to the Queenwood families who supported the team throughout the championships, including the enthusiastic cowbells.

Queenwood alumna Phoebe Tonkin has returned to Australian screens in the Paramount+ original series Two Years Later.

Her professional career began at 15 in H₂O: Just Add Water and has since moved across Australian and international television, film, directing and producing. More recently, her performance in Boy Swallows Universe received the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Award for Best Lead Actress in a Drama.

Phoebe’s latest role is the next step in an accomplished creative career that has developed through range, discipline and confidence, while retaining a close connection to Australian storytelling.

Artemis, Queenwood’s new Esther Road centre is due to open in 2027.

Named after the figure known as protector of young women and nurturer of the young, Artemis reflects Queenwood’s aspirations for the education young women require now. One that brings together technical competence, ethical reasoning, creativity, character and leadership.

The Centre will unite art, engineering, design, technology, humanities and the performing arts within a rigorous transdisciplinary environment.

Artemis is built for significance, as well as success. It is a place where girls will be challenged not only to make, design, perform, analyse and build, but to ask why their work matters and how it might contribute to the world around them.

Creative thinking belongs inside the academic curriculum of Queenwood’s Junior School.

Young girls may encounter it while composing music, drawing from observation, coding a sequence, reading, measuring, rehearsing, solving a scientific problem or explaining her reasoning in mathematics. Each experience asks something different of her, while building the same disciplined habits of attention, experimentation, reflection, feedback and refinement.

At Queenwood Junior School, a liberal education gives girls breadth of experience and through high expectations they learn to take their own ideas seriously. These habits are developed through daily practice, where girls test out ways to build confidence in their thinking and discover who they can become.

Queenwood’s Junior School Open Morning takes place this Thursday, giving families considering Kindergarten to Year 6 the opportunity to see how each girls’ learning journey takes shape from the early years.

Across the morning, families can meet students and teachers, explore classroom and specialist learning, and learn how Queenwood combines warmth and challenge within a community where each girl is known.

Families considering Years 7 to 12 can also register for the Senior School Open Morning later this month, with opportunities to explore Queenwood’s academic pathways, cocurricular breadth and approach to building character alongside knowledge.
