This year, SIMS is taking marine science to two of the Australian Museum’s National Science Week events - reaching students, teachers and the wider science community.

This National Science Week, we’re getting involved in a few different ways, from events across Sydney to a behind-the-scenes look at our work here on this channel.

At the events: We’re co-hosting an exciting marine science symposium with UNSW, and joining the Australian Museum’s ‘Sydney Science Trail’ and ‘The Science Social’ to share marine science with students and the community.

Biirrinba – Living Dreaming, Living Seawalls🌊

The Biirrinba (Clarence River) meets the Pacific Ocean at Yamba, home of the Yaegl People – where the Dirrangun shaped islands then came to rest, and the Giant Eel met the sea.

The River is intertwined with the Dreaming, a living history of the Bundjalung, Gumbaynggirr, and Ngarabal Nations. Today, breakwalls reduce habitat and disconnect Biirrinba from its living Culture.

In 2025, Birrigan Gargle Aboriginal Land Council initiated a new collaboration with the marine scientists at Living Seawalls to strengthen the ecological and cultural health of their Sea Country. Together – with funding from the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development – they’re trialling Living Boulders in the Yamba breakwall to bring back habitat for fish, seaweed and oysters, with the aim of expanding up and down the NSW coast.

This work echoes this year’s NAIDOC theme, ‘50 Years of Deadly’ – community first, and the reconnection of Country and Culture.

This NAIDOC Week, we’re sharing stories that show what marine science looks like when Culture leads.

From north-east Arnhem Land to coastal New South Wales, Traditional Owners and Rangers are leading the care of their Sea Country – with SIMS and partners contributing where invited.
Each echoes this year’s theme, 50 Years of Deadly: Culture leading, community first and the next generation carrying it forward.

Elephant seals 🦭 are helping us understand one of the least observed, yet critically important and rapidly changing regions on Earth.

In this podcast, SIMS’s Dr Clive McMahon shares how southern elephant seals, equipped with innovative ocean sensors, are transforming our understanding of the Southern Ocean. These deep-diving animals collect real-time data on temperature, salinity, depth and ocean productivity in places beyond the reach of traditional observing systems, particularly during the Antarctic winter.

This work sits at the heart of the Integrated Marine Observing System - IMOS Animal Tagging Facility, a globally recognised program. For two decades, IMOS animal-borne sensors have delivered critical oceanographic data across vast and inaccessible regions, supporting climate science, ocean forecasting and marine ecosystem research.

These observations now underpin international efforts through the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), contributing to improved understanding of ocean circulation, Antarctic bottom water formation and climate-driven change.
