Singapore’s Education Minister Desmond Lee outlines an age-appropriate approach to AI in classrooms, ensuring students learn about, with, and beyond AI without losing essential critical thinking skills.

Core Policy and Implementation

Primary 1 to Primary 3:
💻 No assignments require direct AI use. The focus remains on tactile, physical learning to build foundational knowledge.

💻 Students only receive general AI literacy to recognize its presence in daily life.

Primary 4 to Primary 6:
💻Students are permitted to use educational AI tools under teacher supervision.

Secondary and Beyond:
💻 Students are taught to master and steer AI rather than rely on it blindly, ensuring deep human learning is not replaced by AI shortcuts.

I often see students and parents put immense pressure on themselves to get everything right immediately. But real, lasting resilience isn't about being perfect, it's a practice.

When structural shifts, tricky concepts, or exam pressures build up, shifting our focus to these 4 pillars can transform how we approach challenges:

➞ Perspective: Stepping back from a difficult task to see the bigger picture and focusing purely on what we can control right now.

➞ Patience: Trusting that meaningful academic and personal growth takes time. Steady progress is built slowly!

➞Perseverance: Keeping on climbing through difficult or uncomfortable learning curves without giving up.

➞ Progress: Moving away from waiting for "perfect conditions" and celebrating the small, consistent steps forward instead.

According to Understood, an organisation dedicated to learning and thinking differences, up to 15% of people around the world have a specific learning disability (SpLD), including Dyslexia, Dyscalculia and Dysgraphia (not exhaustive). Last week, I had the pleasure of spending some time at the stunning new Google Melbourne offices, completing both my Google Certified Educator Level 2 and Gemini Educator certifications.

Following on from my Level 1 training back in March, it was a fantastic opportunity to deepen the digital frameworks I bring back to the school environments, educators, and families I support through Walsh Education Consulting.

A massive thank you to Phil Carew and the Deploy Learning team for facilitating such an energetic and knowledge-packed week, and to the team at Google Australia for the wonderful hospitality. The new space—from the Yarra inspired staircase to the beautiful Indigenous artworks—was the perfect backdrop for innovation.

As AI and technology become a permanent part of our classrooms, my focus is always on how we can use these tools safely, ethically, and purposefully to support neurodivergent students.

Here is a glimpse into how I am integrating these new tools into my practice:

🌟 "Brain First, AI Second": This is a vital principle I teach students. We want them to conceptualise ideas independently before utilising AI to refine them. This ensures they retain critical thinking skills and build stronger neural connections.

🌟 Scaffolding for Independence: Using tools like Gemini Chat, custom Gems, and NotebookLM to design highly personalised, guided learning experiences that reduce cognitive load for students with Dyslexia, ADHD, and executive functioning challenges.

🌟 Supporting School Ecosystems: Exploring how Gemini in Google Classroom can help schools and teachers streamline workflows, differentiate learning materials effortlessly, and keep classrooms beautifully organised for diverse learners.

This training is an exciting stepping stone as I work towards the Google for Education Certified Innovator program later this year. I am so looking forward to collaborating with local schools, teachers, and families to close learning gaps and build inclusive digital spaces!

With mid-year exams coming up, I just wanted to pop in and offer a bit of support for any local families who might be feeling that familiar mix of stress, revision overload, or “we’re not quite where we need to be yet” at school.

I’m a registered VIT teacher based in Mornington (Beleura Hill), and I work 1:1 with students across primary and secondary.

I support:
📚 Primary Maths & Literacy (reading, writing, spelling & numeracy)
📚 Secondary Maths (including exam preparation and filling learning gaps)
📚 Private school entrance exam preparation
📚 Students who may benefit from a more structured, calm approach — including those with ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, or confidence-based learning challenges

A lot of the students I work with are capable but have simply lost confidence, fallen a bit behind, or just need concepts explained in a clearer, more step-by-step way. My focus is always on rebuilding understanding and confidence so learning starts to feel manageable again.

Sessions are in-person from Mornington, and I currently have a small number of after-school spots available.
