I had the huge honour of presenting Aedan with his yellow belt today!

Aedan has been training at the club for over 4 years now. It has been amazing to witness him growing in confidence, skill and technique throughout this time. He has trained very consistently, continued to work hard and the results speak for themselves. He has developed a solid Jiu-Jitsu style with fantastic takedowns and a very dangerous guard. He also is a fantastic training partner who loves helping out new students with their technique and an absolute joy to teach.

Seeing the energy and dedication in our kids' classes lately has been absolutely incredible! I have the regular honour of watching these young legends push themselves, learn new skills, and most importantly, have a blast while doing it. It’s not just about the BJJ technique; it’s about the resilience, the teamwork, and the smiles we see every single time they step on the mats.

Our community here at Bayside is truly blessed to have such a great group of young grapplers. Whether they’re working on their technique or just enjoying a roll with friends, their progress since the day they walked in the door has been formidable.

A massive thank you to all the parents for being such an integral part of our club culture. It’s awesome to see the kids going from strength to strength in such a supportive, ego-free environment. Can’t wait to see everyone back on the mats for the next session!

I had the honour of presenting James with his blue belt last night!

James has been at the club for just over 2 years now. In this time he has developed a very solid Jiu-Jitsu style with a particular passion for playing from his guard. He trains consistently and is hard working, but has absolutely no ego when he is on the mats. He is constantly asking questions to improve and his attitude makes him a pleasure to teach and train with.

I had the massive honour of presenting Sergej with his purple belt last night!

Sergej originally joined our club over 7.5 years ago, having originally started his Jiu-Jitsu journey over 10 years ago. He is hardworking and loves a challenge, currently competing as often as he can. He has almost limitless energy and has earned a reputation for his lightning fast knee bars. He is one of the most friendly people you are ever likely to meet, making friends effortlessly wherever he goes. This includes all the competitors he comes up against regardless of the results. He is a huge asset to our club as an assistant instructor who you can find at the club on most days helping out with our kids classes, and the kids all love him. He has a level of maturity well beyond his years, and I have absolutely no doubt that he will be successful in anything he pursues. I am totally blessed to count him as a student, an assistant and a friend!

I had the massive honour of presenting Dwaine with his brown belt last night.

Dwaine has been a member of our club for over 9 years now, originally joining with his brother Nick when we were still based in a church hall. He has trained consistently throughout this time and developed strong takedowns and an impressive pressure based Jiu-Jitsu style. He is very humble in the way he approaches his Jiu-Jitsu and always asks lots of questions to continue improving. He is a formidable competitor who regularly puts himself to the test. Most recently winning a gold medal in the Victorian Championships in the no-gi division this weekend. It has been a delight to count him as both a student and a friend, and I am so proud of how far he has come over the course of his Jiu-Jitsu journey so far.

I had the huge honour of presenting Mandy with her orange belt yesterday.

Mandy has been a regular in our kids classes for over 5 years now. With her dad and brother also being regulars on the mats, Jiu-Jitsu definitely runs in the family. Her love of Jiu-Jitsu is infectious, and she almost always has a massive smile on her face whenever she is at the club. She is a real role model within our kids classes and volunteers her time to help out new students whenever she can. All this being said, she is also a formidable grappler who can dominate much larger opponents. If she gets your back, you are in big trouble as she chokes you with a smile.

We had a fun weekend out at the Victorian Championships with a small team putting themselves to the test. The team finished the day with 2 gold, 1 silver and 8 bronze medals!

It was fantastic to watch everyone put their heart and soul into every match and have vocal support from the sidelines from those that came to show their support. Not everyone got the results they were hoping for, but they can all hold their head up high and be proud of their efforts. I have no doubt that many of them will return again more prepared for the challenges that lie before them!

What an incredible day yesterday at Grappling Industries! I had the honour of watching our team step onto the mats and represent Bayside BJJ with such heart and technical skill.

It’s one thing to train hard in the academy, but seeing everyone test themselves and support each other on competition day is what this club is all about. We walked away with some fantastic results:

🥉 4 Bronze

Placing 7th overall in the Adults division is a massive achievement and a testament to the consistency everyone has been putting in lately. Whether you stood on the podium or not, the sportsmanship and team spirit were second to none. I’m truly proud of the way everyone handled themselves: formidable on the mats and absolute legends off them.

A very special mention has to go to Maria and Jared who competed for the first time at this event and put everything they had into their matches.

Thank you to everyone who came down to cheer on the crew. It really shows the strength of our community. Let’s keep this momentum going as we get back to work on the mats this week!
