Coalfields Training Excellence Centre CTEC is turning traditional schooling and training on its head by providing innovative training to our students and wider community

Coalfields Training Excellence Centre (CTEC) is turning traditional schooling and training on its head by consistently looking at new innovative ways of getting school leavers ready for the job market. Through alternative pathways programs run by CTEC, “Leader of the pack” is often a term to describe the centre. As well as supporting our local Senior students the centre endeavours to support the

community, providing access to our resources as a venue for meetings, the use of computer labs and training rooms as well as providing further training. Programs such as Get Set for Work- GEMS, School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATS), Moranbah Alternate Skills Training (MAST) and links with Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy (QMEA) have proven a recipe for success at CTEC. Through the Get Set for Work-GEMS, CTEC works with youth who are at risk of disengaging from school or have already left school. Aimed at getting young people into employment, GEMS provides training and education through individual tailor made programs for each student. Many of the students at MSHS begin working in their chosen careers while still at school by taking on a School-Based apprenticeship or traineeship. Students earn an income and get valuable experience while completing additional studies through TAFE or another training organisation. Moranbah’s Advance Skills Training program also allows senior students at MSHS the opportunity to fast track to an apprenticeship. Students concentrate on just three core subjects over two days at school and the rest of their time is spend in a hands on work environment where they complete real life projects and gain valuable skills making them workshop ready. An example of this is students who have completed a Certificate II in Engineering and Resources and Infrastructure work preparation. The opportunities offered through the centre have recently been recognised as programs of excellence with a recent award from Skills DMC recognising the industry partnership programs that have been pioneered in Moranbah using the facility. Further to this award, a group representatives from the national training advisory bodies of Australia recently visited Moranbah to investigate the secrets to the success of the high quality programs on offer.
