AFTRS films are heading to the Heart Of Gold International Short Film Festival this September!

Five productions will screen at the festival in Gympie, with Interview with a Hero and Tuesday, Tuesday both nominated for Best Australian Short Film. Tuesday, Tuesday has also been nominated for the Screeners Pick Award.

Bringing His Spirit Home, Goodbye, Fishies and Nothing and the Sun are also screening at the festival, showcasing the breadth of storytelling emerging from the Master of Arts Screen and Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production programs.

Congratulations to AFTRS Discipline Lead in Radio and Podcasting, Andrea Ho, who has been recognised as the Trailblazer Industry Choice Award winner at the inaugural Trailblazers Radiodays Asia Awards in Jakarta.

Andrea was honoured for her contribution to developing radio and podcasting talent and for her leadership in education and professional development at AFTRS.

From her beginnings in community broadcasting in Melbourne and NSW, through journalism and daily on-air presenting at the ABC in regional NSW, to leading ABC radio and online teams in Hobart and Canberra, Andrea has dedicated her career to audio storytelling and supporting the voices that serve local communities.

Her work continues to shape the next generation of radio and podcasting practitioners at AFTRS.

AFTRS Master of Arts Screen: Business graduate and producer, writer and director Francisca Braithwaite found her path through artistic creativity and a solid business sense.

Her short film Finding Addison won the AACTA Award for Best Short Film in 2024, an experience Francisca says helped catapult her career. She has since completed an emerging producer placement through Screen NSW.

Meet Beatrice Nell as she takes us behind the scenes of 18th Floor and shares some of the key responsibilities of a script supervisor on set.

A script supervisor works side by side with the director to ensure their vision is accurately reflected on screen, while also representing the editor's needs by tracking coverage, continuity and eyelines. Through detailed notes and a marked script, they help ensure every element comes together seamlessly, a fundamental bridge between production and post-production.

Written and directed by Madison McCreath, 18th Floor is a romantic tragedy set in 1960s Potts Point, Sydney. The film tells the story of an elevator boy who falls in love with a young woman, only to discover she is not who he believes her to be, leading to heartbreak and disillusionment.

The film is one of AFTRS' Year 3 graduation productions, student-led projects bringing together three years of learning, creative development and craft, produced as part of the Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production program.
