Choosing a flight school is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make at the beginning of your aviation journey ✈️

It’s not just about finding the cheapest option or the closest airport. It’s about finding a school that aligns with your goals, supports your progression and gives you the right environment to become a confident, capable pilot.

Moses Ling, First Solo

“When Anna [the instructor] stepped out of the aircraft, I remember thinking: this is really happening.”

At 16, Moses moved from Hong Kong to Melbourne to train, a big step for anyone, let alone someone still in school. He chose Avia for the chance to fly the Cirrus SR20 out of one of Australia’s busiest training airports.

Eleven hours later, after a solo check he’d been quietly nervous about, Anna climbed out and left him with the aircraft.

“I expected flying to be difficult and intense. I didn’t realise how amazing it would feel once you’re actually up there, seeing Melbourne from above, flying the aircraft yourself, being in control of where you’re going.”

The hardest part wasn’t the flying. It was the circuit.

“There was just so much to manage at once: spotting traffic, flying the plane, doing checks. It was overwhelming.” Anna worked through it with him over the following lessons: look wider for traffic, work out which aircraft ATC is actually referring to, know when to widen the circuit and if you still can’t see them, ask.

“That gave me the confidence to manage traffic safely.”

Next up: more solo time, more hours, and an RPL on the horizon.

“My first solo showed me that all the lessons and practice really do pay off.”

Meet the Owner: Charles ✈️
Every flight school has a story. Ours starts with a 16-year-old kid riding his bike to Moorabbin Airport each week, saving up lawn-mowing money for lessons.
 
“I learnt to fly at the Royal Victorian Aero Club and knew straight away this was the career for me. After a career in the airlines, I wanted to give back — to bring what I’d learnt at that level down to the grassroots.”
 
With over 15,000 hours in the air, Charles has no shortage of memories — his first flight in command as an airline Captain among them. But ask him what he enjoys most now, and the answer isn’t in the logbook.
 
“These days it’s watching our clients achieve their own milestones. In some cases, you see flying transform their lives — even their businesses.”
