HIT AIR OOPS! #1 🐴😂

You wouldn't drive your car with your seatbelt draped across you but not clicked in… would you? 🚗

Well, wearing your Hit Air vest without connecting the lanyard to your saddle is pretty much the same thing!

Your Hit Air vest is designed to inflate when the lanyard is pulled with sufficient force during a fall. But without that connection, it can't activate as intended.

It's a small step that's easy to overlook, especially when you're busy getting ready to ride.

So make it part of your routine:

✅ Helmet on
✅ Hit Air vest on
✅ Mount your horse
✅ Clip your lanyard to the saddle strap
✅ Ready to ride!

Sometimes we learn the hardest lessons when we're trying to do the right thing. 🐴

When a horse is reluctant to move forward, it's natural to question whether pain or discomfort could be contributing to the problem.

But identifying exactly where that discomfort is coming from isn't always straightforward.

My recent experience with my young horse has been both frustrating and heartbreaking.

After trying Bute to investigate whether pain was contributing to his reluctance to move forward, his behaviour deteriorated dramatically.

Knowing his history of hindgut dysfunction, I strongly believe the Bute aggravated an already sensitive digestive system.

And the more I've researched, the more concerned I've become.

Phenylbutazone (Bute) is a commonly used anti-inflammatory medication, but it can also have significant effects on the digestive tract, including changes to the hindgut microbiome, intestinal irritation and, in some cases, serious conditions such as right dorsal colitis.

While I can't confirm exactly what happened internally in my horse, the change I witnessed has made me question the role the medication played.

For now, I've stopped trying to ride him. It's time to reassess, investigate further and listen to what he's telling me.

After more than 45 years around horses, I'm still learning. And sometimes the lessons aren't easy.

Could your horse be lacking salt? 🐴🧂

Salt is essential for normal hydration, nerve and muscle function and horses need it all year round, not only during hot weather.

So how might you know they're not getting enough?

You may notice things such as reduced drinking, unusual licking or chewing of objects, eating soil, reduced appetite, lethargy or poorer performance. More significant sodium deficiency can also affect muscle and nerve function.

But these signs aren't specific to salt deficiency and can have many other causes, so they're a reason to look more closely at your horse's overall diet and health rather than diagnose a deficiency yourself.

And remember — sweating increases salt and electrolyte losses. A horse in work or sweating heavily may need more than a horse at maintenance, whatever the season.

🐴 Salt requirements vary according to your horse's size, diet, workload and sweat losses.
💧 Always provide unrestricted access to clean, fresh water.

If you're unsure whether your horse's diet is providing enough salt, speak to your vet or equine nutrition professional.

Why does my horse’s saddle suddenly seem tighter than it used to?

Your saddle may not have changed, but your horse has. 🐴

Changes in:

• Weight
• Muscle development
• Fitness
• Workload
• Age
• Time off
• Season

can all change your horse’s shape and affect how their saddle fits.

A saddle that fitted before may not fit the same way now.

When does “bad behaviour” stop being about discomfort and become a learned behaviour? 🐴

Sometimes we find the physical cause, address it… and yet the behaviour remains.

Perhaps the horse remembers that something once hurt.
Perhaps the behaviour has become a habit.
Or perhaps there is still something we're missing.

There isn't always an obvious answer.

For me, the important part is not immediately assuming a horse is simply being difficult.
It's taking the time to observe, investigate and rule out possible causes before deciding how to respond.

Our horses can't explain why they're reacting, which means sometimes we have to become pretty good detectives.

For me, saddle fit has never just been about the saddle. It’s about the horse underneath it. 🐴

When we ask our horses to carry us, train with us and perform with us, I believe we have a responsibility to make their comfort part of every decision we make.

That was particularly important to me when starting my young horse’s ridden journey. I wanted to give him the best possible foundation from the beginning - and that journey ultimately led me to Black Country Saddles.

The response to my last post about hindgut dysbiosis showed me just how many horse owners are asking questions about gut health. 🐴

And that's exactly why I wanted to continue the conversation.

Gut issues aren't always straightforward, and sometimes the signs we notice first aren't necessarily digestive ones. We notice changes in our horse - in their comfort, behaviour, sensitivity or willingness to work - and start trying to understand why.

I'm certainly not suggesting that every behavioural change is caused by the gut, or that we should try to diagnose our horses ourselves. If you're concerned about your horse, your equine vet should always be your first port of call.

But I do believe there's value in observing our horses closely, asking questions and continuing to learn.

I've spent more than 45 years around horses and I'm still learning from them.

I've also found a few things over the years that have worked well for my own horses when supporting their hindgut health.

Cape W**d is pretty, but is it doing our horses any favours? 🌼🐴

I’ve talked before about the changes in behaviour I’ve noticed in my horses when Cape W**d is abundant, but there’s more to the story.

The sugars and starches in pasture can have a big impact on the delicate microbial balance in the hindgut and this can contribute to hindgut dysbiosis.

In today’s Reel, I’m chatting about what hindgut dysbiosis is, what can contribute to it, and why those changes in the pasture can matter more than we might realise.

Because sometimes, what looks pretty in the paddock can be a little more complicated on the inside. 🌿
