Native Australian Bees with Plant Pigment Watercolour Workshop

Discover the beauty of Native Australian bees through plant-based watercolour in this relaxed, beginner-friendly workshop. Explore natural pigments made from colour-rich plants such as cosmos flowers, madder root, and indigo, creating soft, earthy colours with a beautiful, natural vintage quality.

In this workshop, you’ll learn how to observe and paint Native Australian bees. Using Lutea plant watercolours, you’ll explore the delicate shapes, intricate markings, fine wings, and subtle colours that make these fascinating little pollinators so unique.

The workshop is designed to encourage you to slow down, look closely, and enjoy the meditative and mindful practice of painting, while capturing the character and delicate details of the bee.

What you’ll learn:
* How to observe the form and distinctive features of Native Australian bees
* How to work with plant watercolours to create subtle, natural colour
* Techniques for capturing fine details such as wings, markings, and texture
* How to build delicate layers of colour while maintaining a light, natural feel
* How painting can become a meditative and mindful practice

Did you know our Kids Art Classes and Homeschool Clubs are Steiner-inspired?

Fi, the teacher and owner of Sunshine Art School, has qualifications in both Fine Art and Steiner Education and spent many years working in Steiner schools.

Our art classes are about so much more than making art. We want to bring a sense of magic and wonder into each child’s creative experience. Before beginning an artwork, we often introduce storytelling or puppet plays to spark the imagination, along with candles and beautiful instruments to create a calm, magical atmosphere.

We focus on seasonal artworks to encourage children to feel connected to, and develop reverence for, the natural world. This philosophy is also reflected in the natural, non-toxic and eco-friendly art materials we use throughout the school.

Every artwork is thoughtfully planned, from the use of circles, curves and flowing forms to details such as including the roots of plants. By drawing the roots it gently introduces the idea that what is unseen can be just as important as what is visible — that life is supported by hidden processes beneath the surface.

We also prefer not to use grids or formulas in our kids’ classes. Instead, we encourage children to draw what they feel, not simply what they see. 💛 When children spend too much time measuring, aligning and correcting, they can lose the joy, rhythm and natural flow of creating.

Did you know we’ve also got Afternoon “after work” Art classes for Adults and Teens on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Fridays!

Our adult classes are all run “studio style”, meaning you get to choose the medium and subject you would like to paint or draw, and we guide and support you through your own individual artistic journey.

Rather than doing block classes where everyone uses the same materials and subject each week, students are free to focus on what they feel most passionate and inspired by — whether that be watercolour botanicals, oil painting, soft pastels, drawing and more.

For beginners who are unsure where to start, we go on an individual journey with each student, exploring different mediums and subjects to discover what feels most natural and enjoyable for them.

We love the studio-style approach because it allows students to dedicate themselves to a medium they truly enjoy and gradually build confidence and mastery over the term.

We are able to offer this personalised studio-style approach because our classes are small and intimate, with a maximum of 10 students, allowing the teacher to work closely with each individual. This is one of the many things that makes our art school unique.

Did you know we love to include roots in our pictures…

In our children’s classes, we often paint the roots of plants, and this is done with intention. We gently introduce the idea that what is unseen is just as important as what is visible—that life is supported by hidden processes beneath the surface. Rather than separating parts of the plant, such as leaves or flowers, we approach it as a living whole. This helps children develop a more holistic perception of life.
By including the roots it allows the plant to feel more complete and truly alive. As children draw and paint them, it subtly nurtures a sense of being supported and grounded. It also brings an awareness of growth and the quiet, hidden forces that sustain life. In this way, children begin to experience not only the outer beauty of the plant, but its inner life and connection to the earth, fostering a deeper reverence for life as a whole.

The Prince and the Snow Dragon

Once upon a time, in a kingdom far away, there lived a king and his three sons. One was strong, the other was clever, and the third was kind.

There was a dragon the colour of snow that tormented the land, breathing ice over the crops in the kingdom. Not knowing what to do, the King sent his strong son to conquer the dragon, which lived on top of the hill. But alas, he was not able to withstand the ice-cold dragon.
The King then sent his clever son, who tried to sneak up behind the dragon, but he too failed.

The King did not know what to do.
The third son asked his father if he could try to persuade the dragon to leave the kingdom alone. His father had little hope for him, as he was neither strong nor clever, but he agreed anyway.

The third son loved gardening, but nothing would grow in the ice and snow that the dragon breathed out — except snowdrop flowers.
The Prince picked the flowers, headed up the hill and placed them in front of the dragon’s den.

The dragon was so taken aback by his kindness that its heart began to warm, and it changed colour from white to green, and then to gold.
It flew up into the air with excitement, and instead of ice, it breathed out fire.
Because of the Prince’s kindness, the dragon vowed to take care of and keep watch over the kingdom.
And from that day on, the kingdom was safe.

How adorable are these geese done by Georgie in the Tuesday morning adult Art Class!

She used the very special Lutea plant watercolours made with plants and made her lines with a stick dipped in India Ink.

Georgie captured the movement of the waddling geese perfectly by making her ink lines squiggly and leaving small gaps between them.

Tip: One of the best dip pens to use for ink is the stick. Get a dry stick from your garden and sharpen it with a pencil sharpener.

One of our favourite dip pens at the Art School is the humble stick. It doesn’t have a well like other dip pens which holds ink so it runs out of ink faster which creates much more expressive and ‘alive’ lines 💛

The longer day is designed to give teens time to connect with one another and develop genuine friendships while exploring their creativity.

Our days will include exploring the world of art through handmade art journals, natural pigments, nature journaling, botanical art, still life and a variety of traditional and natural mediums including watercolour, charcoal, oil painting and natural inks.

At lunchtime, weather permitting, we’ll walk to beautiful Russell Park behind the school for a peaceful picnic beneath the pecan trees. This gives the teens time to relax, talk and connect before returning for the afternoon session.

The afternoon will be a Studio-Style Art Session, where each teen can choose a medium and subject they feel passionate about, with individual help and guidance.

The group will be limited to 10 teens and will be taught by me, Fi, owner and teacher of Sunshine Art School. I have qualifications in Fine Art and Steiner Education and worked in Steiner Schools for many years.
