Salix integra ‘hakuro nishiki’
Known as the dappled willow or flamingo willow, extremely tough, vigorous and grows in full sun to complete shade. Best position is morning sun with afternoon shade so the variegated white leaves don’t get sunburnt.
We mostly graft them as standards to create a colourful ball on a stick shape that is easy to maintain by trimming it once or twice per year. Autumn colour is yellow to orange and in cold areas the stems turn red to orange in winter.
Trim to a round ball or if Left untrimmed it will grow approx 2.5m high x 2.5m wide in 10 years.
We have 2 sizes in stock and they will be available mid December or email us to pre order. [email protected]
12 varieties of ITOH peonies will be available from Tuesday 25th November in 25cm pots. As seen featured on Gardening Australia last Friday.
The Itoh peony originated in Japan in 1948, the result of a successful cross between a tree peony and a herbaceous peony by Japanese botanist Dr. Toichi Itoh. Itoh sadly passed away before his hybrids flowered, and American horticulturist Louis Smirnow eventually introduced them to the West, ensuring the hybrids were named in his honor. These intersectional hybrids combine the woody stems and flower shape of tree peonies with the dieback and hardiness of herbaceous peonies.
They are easy to grow and produce captivating flowers, simply plant in a full sun to partly shady position, they are not fussy on soil type and you will have an abundance of flowers multiplying each year. Just simply add some compost, fertiliser and mulch, water well for the first Spring/Summer and after that they are quite tough.
Growing to approximately 1m high by 1 metre wide in the first 5 years. Unlike tree peonies, these do not need lime or alkaline soil to thrive, they will perform in any soil type, although do produce more flowers in cooler climates. They will grow and flower in areas such as Adelaide, Sydney and even parts of southern Queensland.
