When you go out for dinner and the table reservation is in Scrabble letters, it really appeals to a spelling teacher! Happy holidays everyone!

Thank you Whizz Bean for such a great phonics-based game. My students are so enjoying this and, as parents are always in the session with us, we all get to play it. We have been adding suffixes to any words we put back in the ‘junk’ pile.

We never get tired of play dough for multi-sensory activities here at Smarties Private Tutoring. This student is using it to consolidate her knowledge of the FLOSS spelling pattern and has added some suffixes to the end of each word.

We’ve been using maths bars today to prove and understand how decimals are converted to fractions and vice versa. This is NSW Stage 3 Maths content made easier to understand by using concrete materials to manipulate.

Nonsense words are an important part of learning to decode real words because students can’t guess at a nonsense word but instead have to make each sound to build the word. We’ve been using magnetic counters hidden in sand to make nonsense words. Younger students are making CVC and CVCC words but this activity is easily suited to older students using vowel teams as well.

The Smarties super stack is coming soon. Watch out for it in Reception. It’s the same stack as the Smarties logo but it’s a super challenge as the pebbles are much smaller and harder to balance. Great for fine motor skills and cognitive planning as you build the stack. Are you up for the challenge?

Including games during the session is a key part of learning at Smarties. Whilst this game didn’t take long to play, I used it afterwards to revisit the concept of square numbers.

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. It’s a crucial skill for reading and spelling, as it involves understanding that words are made up of individual sounds that can be separated, blended, and changed. Importantly, phonemic awareness is auditory and doesn’t involve letters or print. This student is completing a phonemic awareness exercise by changing the initial phoneme and substituting it with another one to build a new word. The buttons provide a multisensory element.

When it’s grey, cold, wet and windy outside, there’s definitely a need for sparkles and fun activities inside to bring out the smiles. We played Guess My Number as a warm up game for place value using lots of wonderful mathematical vocabulary.

Some super syllable work in show today for the stable syllable ‘tion’. This is an introductory lesson to this spelling where explicit identification of the syllable is key, along with a lot of vocabulary discussion. We identified whether the first syllable was open or closed.
