Thank you Whizz Bean for such a great phonics-based game. My students are so enjoying this and, as parents are always in the session with us, we all get to play it. We have been adding suffixes to any words we put back in the ‘junk’ pile.

Nonsense words are an important part of learning to decode real words because students can’t guess at a nonsense word but instead have to make each sound to build the word. Younger students are making CVC and CVCC words but this activity is easily suited to older students using vowel teams as well.

Great for fine motor skills and cognitive planning as you build the stack. Are you up for the challenge?

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. It’s a crucial skill for reading and spelling, as it involves understanding that words are made up of individual sounds that can be separated, blended, and changed. Importantly, phonemic awareness is auditory and doesn’t involve letters or print. This student is completing a phonemic awareness exercise by changing the initial phoneme and substituting it with another one to build a new word. The buttons provide a multisensory element.
