🌱 Our Adventures 🌱

This week we have enjoyed a range of child-led experiences, from simple games created at family day care to exploring our local library and Adelaide Zoo.

Within our small group setting, children quickly develop a sense of belonging, knowing that their ideas are valued and encouraged. Recently, it has been exciting to see the children's confidence continue to grow as they freely share their ideas and take an increasingly active role in our days together.

With the flexibility that family day care offers, many of the children have already been excitedly planning excursions for the week ahead. 💚

🌱 Exploring Kudlila at the Creek 🌱

This week, we returned to one of our favourite nature spaces to continue exploring the changes Kudlila (winter) has brought to our environment.

Over the past couple of months, we have been discussing the seasonal changes we might notice during this time of year. After the recent rainfall, the children were excited to discover just how much the creek had changed. We observed much higher water levels, watched 10 beautiful baby ducklings from afar, and one child even noticed blossoms beginning to appear.

Back at day care, we revisited our Kudlila floor book page and added to our collection of observations. Through regular visits to familiar places, children have opportunities to notice, compare and reflect on the changing environment around them. 💚

🌱 Community Connections 🌱

This week we enjoyed opportunities to connect with two different groups of children, broadening our social experiences and strengthening our sense of community.

One of the many strengths of family day care is the security of a small, familiar group. From this strong foundation, children can confidently venture into the wider community, building relationships, learning alongside others and experiencing new social situations while knowing they have the support of familiar peers and their educator.

Time spent in our community also provides meaningful opportunities to develop independence, practise road safety, and learn to respectfully share spaces with others.

🌱 Fostering a Love of Literacy 🌱

Last week, the children helped to set up a Hungry Caterpillar story table after enjoying the story together over several days, with families also sharing that they read the story at home. This week, they continued their exploration, with preschool-aged children independently sequencing the story using story stones while supporting younger group members to join in. The younger children also enjoyed exploring the caterpillar and butterfly puppets.

Throughout the week, we also shared many songs together, continuing to build communication, language and confidence through shared experiences. 💚

🌱 Growing Communication 🌱

Recently, I have noticed a change in the way the children share their ideas. Suggestions that were once a single word, such as “sandpit”, are now becoming detailed plans like “I want to build a sandcastle in the sandpit,” and “obstacle course” has become “I want to make an obstacle course down the bottom with…” as the group confidently expand on their thinking.

Through ongoing conversations and gentle scaffolding, the children are becoming increasingly confident communicators, using more language to express their ideas, make plans and include others in their play.

🌱 The Generosity of Our Community 🌱

One of the things that makes family day care so special is the wonderful sense of community we share. I am incredibly grateful for the generosity of our families, with one donating a beautiful mud kitchen and another sharing a bag of juicy oranges.

The new mud kitchen has already inspired lots of imaginative play in our sandpit, with the children creating meals, mixing ingredients and sharing their ideas together. The oranges were enjoyed as each child squeezed their own juice to have with afternoon tea. It was wonderful to see the children using their hands to squeeze every last drop before proudly enjoying the juice they had made themselves.

🌱 Plan B 🌱

When cooking our damper over the fire didn't go to plan this week, we embraced Plan B. Our school-age children took the lead, reshaping the damper into individual heart-shaped serves before baking them in the oven. The children showed great patience as they waited for the oven to heat up and eagerly celebrated their delicious result together. It was a wonderful reminder that things don't always go to plan, and that sometimes a different approach can be just as successful.

Another highlight of our week has been the children's sustained interest in obstacle courses. Designed entirely by the children, the courses have encouraged the group to challenge themselves, line up, take turns and celebrate one another's achievements as they worked towards beating their own best times. It has been lovely to see this child-led interest continue to grow over many weeks.

🌱 Learning Together 🌱

This week we enjoyed our first fire pit of the season after spending time revisiting fire safety together over the last few weeks. The children confidently shared ways to stay safe around the fire, with many remembering ideas from last year and one child making connections to their experiences at kindy.

Our fire was made even more special when the school-age children independently made damper, sharing their knowledge and supporting the younger children to cook their own pieces. It was wonderful to see children learning from one another with such confidence and care.

We also enjoyed a nature excursion, where our school-age children brought fresh ideas and perspectives to the group's exploration. It was a lovely reminder of the value of our mixed-age environment, where children inspire, encourage and learn alongside one another.

🌱 Signs of the Season 🌱

This week the children continued noticing changes in our environment as winter begins to emerge around us. During a nature excursion, we discovered the creek flowing with water once again and observed mushrooms growing in the damp conditions. The children also delighted in exploring fallen leaves, rolling amongst them and tossing them into the air.

These observations sparked conversations about seasonal change, the importance of not touching unknown mushrooms, and the Kaurna season of Kudlila.

Back at day care, the children continued exploring and expressing their ideas through play, creating with play dough made at their request and painting with new paint sticks added to our environment following sustained interest in mark making.

Through these experiences, the children are developing a deeper connection with the natural world and learning to notice the many ways our environment changes throughout the year.

🌱 From Seed to Harvest 🌱

This week brought lots of excitement as the children harvested carrots from our garden that they had planted from seed last term. The group was fascinated by the different colours we discovered, including orange, purple and white carrots.

The children eagerly washed, prepared and tasted their harvest. Some proudly declared, "I love carrots!" and asked for more, while others weren't so sure but were willing to give them a try. It was wonderful to see the children showing curiosity and openness as they explored new tastes, colours and experiences together.

Moments like these help children make meaningful connections between planting, growing, harvesting and enjoying food from the garden.
