A client of mine sent me an email in a panic last week. Her little boy has started Kindy and the school sent the BIGGEST YouTube video to parents on how to help their child read at home.

Was it helpful? Yes and no. Yes- they are helping you and giving you the tools for home. But on the otherwise- overwhelming — and what if I do it wrong.

As I sad to her. Just start here. Start with the letter sounds. Grab some letter sound cards to trace with him. And ask him what the sound of each letter is. Not the letter name. The sound.

Simultaneously working from sound to script and back again and connecting not only the beginnings of reading, but reinforcing the beginnings of writing too.

The next thing I said was to get his inspector magnify glass out and when they read their next book together, get him to “find” the letters you have been working on.

Reinforcing learning at home doesn’t need to look big and flashy. You are still reinforcing what has been taught at school, and it doesn’t have to be overwhelming at all- just an everyday moment!

Something that we have continued to gradually build is our professional development that we provide our tutors, and for me, also the opportunity to provide further assistance for teachers in the classroom as well through my personal work .griffiths . This week, I’ve spent some time recording my thoughts for tutors around Vocabulary and how we can continue to build the vocabulary of our learners, which is turn affects comprehension of texts and in writing. This also flows to all other subject areas as well.

The other piece I have been recording this week is for teachers all around what behaviour of students can show us, and how it is a communication with us.

Never in a million years would I have thought that my expertise in the areas of education and learning would have the power to reach millions of educators online- but here we are!

And all of this? Is something that tutors of Breakaway Education are so lucky to be able to receive guidance with - bundled together by our mentoring program!

Reading comprehension is something that often fails to acknowledge the skills that lay under the end result. It is made up of two seperate things.

Our decoding skills (sounding out of words) and our language comprehension (understanding of what they mean).

If either one is missing, the whole thing falls apart.
