Little Galahs Bush Playgroup Mitcham

A morning full of sunshine, and bursting wattle bloom at Yarran Dheran!

We went looking for parts to make nature brushes, and ingredients for some very special potions 🧪

Then we settled into creating a collaborative art piece using our handmade nature brushes 🎨

The highlight of the morning was our little nod to science week - recipes and measures were used to create special potions, then a mix of bicarbonate soda and vinegar created bubbly magic for everyone! 🫧

The magic after the rain 🌧

Days of rain, and then a clear morning. River beds full of water, overflowing ponds, and a creek gushing along!

We spent the morning getting full use of wet weather gear in the creek, searching for the best nature bits to build rakali habitats, and learning about wildlife in our local waterways.

Worms, worms, worms 🪱

They're eyeless, toothless, but full of heart! (5 hearts!)
We had a squiggly, squirmy morning with these fantastic friends.
We found them under rotting leaf litter, fallen logs and under the top layer of wet soil. Learning where they live, handling them with care, then returning them carefully where we found them.

Some little galahs enjoyed a worm rescue sensory tray, while others experimented with expanding colourful worms which transformed when we added water 💧

What a way to spend a cool winter morning!

Celebrating World Nature Conservation Day 🌍

Little galahs spent the morning searching the bush for signs of wildlife, and what a display we were treated to!
Cockatoo acrobatics in the canopy, kookaburras calling out to each other, lorikeets darting from branch to branch, ducks diving in a pond, and even a possum sighting to top it all off!

Yarran Dheran turned on its best self for us ✨️

We loved our book theme this week - we were calling out animal names and making up puzzles of each featured animal. We played a game with matching flashcards, and rescued some muddy animals together.

Marsupial Mayhem

Waring (wombat) season - we channeled our inner wombats and sugar gliders, wearing masks then digging, rolling, tunnelling, and gliding around each other.

We created burrows and creatures with clay, while discussing what made the best marsupial homes.

Bug-stravaganza! 🪲🐞🐜🪳🦟🦗

A day for all our bug buddies.

Learning about bugs and insects, getting up close to some spiny leaf stick insect friends, and looking for interesting bug finds in the bush.
We carefully crafted six-legged stick insects made them crawl around us, what fun!

And just like that..Term 2, 2026 has come to a close. Will you be joining us in Term 3?

Windy Wonderland!🌬

Fully embracing the shifting windy conditions of Waring season, little galahs chased rainbow bubbles as the wind took them in all different directions!

We crafted 'wind sticks' to show us which way the wind was blowing, and experimented with blowing on small leaves and grains of sand, to mimic how wind moves things around us. We stopped to look up at the canopy swaying in the breeze, falling dancing leaves, and little gumnuts dropping around us.

A morning in the company of chattering rainbow lorikeets, gentle gum trees swaying in the breeze, and ripples in ponds.

We took a big bush walk using all 5 senses, stopping to look, touch, smell, listen and taste (just our snacks).
We came back together to create a mini world of Yarran Dheran just as we had seen on our walk - rocks, trees, fallen tree trunks and creeks, all from the natural parts around us.
We sprayed colour on white sheets flapping in the wind, to represent Bunjil's wings as we chatted about the stories of the creation spirit.

Connecting, creating memories, and community building!

Reconciliation and respect - All in.

Little galahs spent the morning sitting in a circle, learning Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung words for all the natural elements we enjoy each week.

We discussed the Aboriginal Flag colours then came together to paint pieces of bark and leaves in red, yellow, and black - putting them together to create a special flag.

We mushroom spotted, built stick forts, and splashed merrily in the creek. What better way to connect with country, in this week of recognition and reconciliation.

A BEE-utiful day to BEE! 🐝

For Bee Day, we painted ourselves in bees and flowers while talking about how pollination works.
We played many games - transferring pollen, working as a team, and doing anything the Queen Bee asked - what fun!

We read a great little book about Aussie bees, and took a nice long walk in the bush looking for clues any pollinators may have left behind.
