Reminder to self: look up. Some of the most impressive fungi are hiding in plain sight โ€” like this enormous bracket fungus clinging to a spotted gum trunk.

I always have to stop and touch the moss. This stunning Starry Hoarmoss (Hedwigia stellata) looked like a tiny forest galaxy clinging to the rocks.

Come check out some cool mushrooms at our Queerobodalla Fungi Foray this June! ๐Ÿ„ ***robodalla ๐ŸŒˆ

When: 10-11 am, Saturday 27 June

Where: Durras Oval, South Durras NSW

What: Step into the wonderfully weird world of fungi with local fungi enthusiast Marita Smith for a one-hour q***r fungi foray that celebrates diversity, transformation, and connection. Learn the fundamentals of mushroom identification while exploring the extraordinary diversity and ecological roles of fungi found across the NSW South Coast. From resilient, long-lived polypores to seasonal favourites like chanterelles โ€” alongside the strange and wonderful forms of stinkhorns, puffballs and earth stars โ€” this walk reveals the often-overlooked organisms quietly shaping our landscapes.

Along the way, youโ€™ll gain insight into how fungi live, grow, and collaborate โ€” forming vast underground networks that share resources, support ecosystems, and quietly shape the landscapes around us. Fungi resist neat categorisation, existing beyond familiar binaries and reminding us that nature has always been more fluid, adaptive, and interconnected than weโ€™re often taught.

Through this lens, the foray invites a deeper appreciation of fungi as organisms of transformation and coexistence โ€” shifting forms, diverse reproductive strategies, and complex relationships that thrive on interdependence and exchange.

This experience is suitable for curious beginners and nature lovers of all ages. Children under 16 must be accompanied by a supervising adult.

Cost: $25 per adult, $10 per child (aged 5-16 years)

Have you ever seen a beefsteak mushroom (Fistulina hepatica)? This edible fungus has deep red, juicy flesh that looks uncannily like a slice of meat. Despite the name, it has a tangy, citrusy flavour and is best eaten when young and well-cooked. Itโ€™s definitely one for the curious palate and the keen-eyed mycophile. Find out more in Urban Shrooming Volume 2!
