Montessori Children's House Auchenflower Kindergarten & Playgroup

We celebrated National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day with an activity shared with me when I worked at Deadly Kindy Gundoo Mira. I was given permission to continue teaching this activity, based on traditional Dreaming. First, we read How the Birds got their Colours. Then I tell the children that we are going to act out the story with some props and costumes. For the first group I read the main plot points. For the next groups I encourage the children to be the narrators. Soon we are all contributing to the story and embracing the 8 ways of learning: Storysharing. The children begin imagining their own stories for how things came to be, asking to put on other plays, engaging, and exploring ideas

It’s about as cold as it gets in Brisbane at the moment…it’s time to bring out the nuttycreation1 by Susan Snowdon penguin hatchlings. Such a lovely way to build fine motor strength, perseverance and concentration.

We welcomed Jacqui Halpin back to kindy today with Parmesan the Reluctant Racehorse Peter Creamer. What better way to celebrate the horses birthday than in our kindy which was originally a stables. The children were fascinated to learn about the process of creating a book, comparing some of the illustrators proofs and making a very spangly bookmark with Jacqui afterwards.

Combining the ‘concrete’ Golden Beads with symbols, building numbers up to 9999. The we build 2 numbers and add them together by moving the Golden Beads into one pile and counting them all.

It makes so much sense when you can hold a thousand. The weighty, dense cube of a thousand golden beads allows the children to sensorially experience a thousand. Then to hold a single precious golden bead. The magic of concrete, hands on materials.

We have combined some fabulous native birds from nuttycreation1 by Susan Snowdon with photos of the birds as a fine motor matching activity. The little hatchlings can be turned into eggs with the thumbs and fingers and the children love them
