Congratulations to Charlie, Will and Hugo on being part of the Norths Bears U18 Junior Premier League team that claimed the NSW State Championship in Maitland.

Congratulations also to Luca, whose team enjoyed an outstanding tournament to finish State Championship runners-up after a hard-fought Grand Final.

Well done to all four students for their commitment, teamwork and sportsmanship, and for representing both their club and their school with distinction.

The inaugural Languages Soirée, a collaboration between St Aloysius’ College and Loreto Kirribilli, was hosted by St Aloysius’ College last week, and attended in great numbers by students, parents and staff from both schools.

The warm and vibrant spirit of the event reinforced our community’s passion for the value of language learning and our ongoing commitment to being Companions in Learning.

Dr Carolyn Stott from the University of Sydney delivered an inspiring keynote address, projecting us into a future where multilingualism and cultural competency continue to be relevant and necessary. This was supported by her guest student speaker, Mitchell Sghabi (SAC 2024), a former student of French at the College, who is currently studying the language at USYD.

Former St Aloysius’ students Chris McMillan (SAC 2006) – for French, Sam Murray (SAC 2010) – for Latin and James Ho (SAC 2024) – for Chinese, shared their stories with authenticity and a down-to-earth spirit. Guests also enjoyed a delicious selection of Italian, French and Chinese food as part of our celebration.

Thanks to who attended and supported this event. It is a wonderful affirmation of our shared belief in the power that languages have to connect communities.

Saturday’s Athletics launch was a great success. Over one hundred boys from the Senior School spent the morning at The College Oval trying out track and field events and taking part in training drills and skills sessions.

New recruits were encouraged by Senior members of the Athletics team and MIC of Athletics, Mr Mitchell Criss stewarded the day, assisted by Mr Johnathon Dobb.

Senior students are encouraged to take part in the Athletics season which will run over the next four weekends. Weekly Invitational carnivals will culminate in the CAS Track and Field Championships on Thursday, 17 September at SOPAC.

Our Year 11 Prefect-Elect spent two days last week taking part in their Prefect retreat at Mary MacKillop Place. Commencing their journey as student leaders, they were supported and guided with sessions presented by Principal, Mr John Browne, Rector, Fr Ross Jones SJ, Head of Year, Mr Lucas Good, and Director of Students, Mr Martin Corcoran.

As they were introduced to the concept of Ignatian Servant Leadership, the boys were challenged to think of the role of Prefect as an opportunity for service, a chance to get to know and support others and contribute positively to the life of the College they love.

Our Prefect-Elect embraced the opportunity to reflect on their responsibilities, strengthen their relationships as a team and develop a shared vision for the year ahead.

Our Year 5 students were transported back to the 1850s for Gold Day this week. Sporting an imaginative array of period-appropriate costumes, the boys spent the day enthusiastically embracing life on the goldfields.

Throughout the day, they dug for gold, made candles, experienced the routines of a colonial schoolhouse and even tried square-dancing. They all gained a deeper appreciation for the challenges faced by those seeking fortune during the Australian Gold Rush.

Special thanks to our Year 5 Grade Coordinator, Mrs Michelle Reay, the Year 5 teaching team, and supporting staff. We are also grateful to our parent volunteers for their involvement throughout the day.

The Feast of the Assumption is centred around Mary’s assumption into heaven, body and soul. This week, the College held three masses to mark this important Feast Day.

The first, held on Wednesday, was attended by students in Years 7 to 11 and concelebrated by Fr Ross Jones SJ and Fr Joshua Choong SJ.

Traditionally at this mass, a female member of staff shares a reflection. This year, Head of Religious Education, Mrs Alison De Sousa reminded those gathered about how Mary said yes to God and lived out that promise throughout her entire life.

On Thursday, the Junior School celebrated their Feast of Assumption Mass in The Boys’ Chapel. During his homily, Fr Ross Jones SJ encouraged the boys to reflect on Mary’s faith and her trust in God.

On Friday, Year 9 students attended Mass in St Joseph’s Catholic Church, celebrated by Fr Ross Jones SJ. Head of Rozelle, Ms Erin Webb also gave a reflection, reminding the boys about Mary’s innate power as a role model.

Mrs De Sousa encouraged us all to look to Mary for inspiration when she said:
"As we celebrate this feast today, let us ask Mary, the first tabernacle and the first disciple, to intercede for us. Like Mary, let our yes be courageous. Let our lives make the Gospel visible. And let us be the generation that carries Christ into the world hearing the words at the end of our own earthly lives, 'well done, good and faithful servant'”.

The annual Year 10 and 11 Latin Reading Competition is a contest in the art of reading Latin text out loud, with correct pronunciation and appropriate expression.

This year, after a round of heats, St Aloysius’ were the only school to have more than one student reach the finals in either Year Group. Evan J and Evan O in Year 10, and Ignacio and Oliver in Year 11.

The finals, held at the University of Sydney, took place this week. Each student read both a prepared piece and an unseen text with just fifteen minutes to prepare.

While the boys did not place, all four did a great job against an incredibly strong field of competitors and we are very proud of them.

Congratulations to Liam, Aras and Finn on completing the City2Surf last weekend, and, between them, raising over $2,100 for Jesuit Refugee Services.

It was also wonderful to see Liam as the top fundraiser for JRS, with his impressive $759 going to support those in need. The boys worked hard in the lead up to the race, running a bake sale and a second-hand bookstore. Fellow Year 6 student Henry also joined them on the trail.

Last weekend was the final round of winter sport, and the final game for many students from the Class of 2026.

Across Rugby, Football, Volleyball and AFL our Year 12 students ran onto the field and court for the final time, supported by their teammates, parents, coaches and fellow Aloysians.

For many, it was an emotional day, the culmination of many years representing the College. No matter the sport, or the team, we are grateful for every student’s contribution. They have worn the uniform with pride and upheld the legacy of the Blue and Gold with honour.

The College wishes our Year 12 students all the very best as they commence their HSC Trial Examinations tomorrow.
