1. They do one task at a time with no workflow
In a café, you cannot just pull a shot, then think about milk, then look for a cup, then start cleaning. Good workflow means setting up the next step while the current step is happening. While your shot is running, you should already be thinking about milk, cups, lids and the next order.

2. They let the station get messy
A messy bench might not seem like a big deal at first, but during a rush it becomes a problem quickly. Spilt milk, coffee grounds, dirty jugs, used cloths and full knock boxes all slow you down and make the station harder to control.

3. They wait too long to reset
Experienced baristas reset constantly. They knock out the puck, wipe the basket, rinse the jug, purge the wand and prepare for the next drink without needing to be reminded.

This is why training matters.

At HG Coffee School in Adelaide, we teach students how to move properly behind the machine, not just how to make one coffee at a time.

Because in a real café, speed comes from workflow.

And confidence comes from knowing what to do next.

1. Bring energy – no one hires the quiet, unsure candidate in a fast-paced café.
2. Know basic coffee terms – even just understanding espresso, milk texturing, etc. goes a long way.
3. Dress like you could start your shift immediately – clean, simple, café-ready.
4. Show willingness to learn – attitude over experience every time.
5. Mention availability clearly – weekends = big tick.
6. Actually engage with the café – comment on their coffee, vibe, or menu so they know you care.
👉 Cafés hire people, not just skills.
