From air fryers and gooey slime to ice cream donuts and face paint, the Year 6 E-Day market brought the Acacia Room to life on Tuesday 9 June. Serving as a spectacular showcase of their business and economics unit, the event turned our Year 6s into full-blown entrepreneurs as younger students flooded through the doors, eager to spend their E-Dollars.
Our Year 6s went above and beyond with creative costumes, professional packaging, and an incredible array of stalls. Booths offered everything from trinkets and brownies to hot chips, games, hair spraying, and face-painting, with younger students interacting beautifully with their older peers to hunt down the most enticing products.
In the days following, the Year 6 students reflected on their experiences, analysing sales data to understand consumer behaviour and evaluate how to improve next time.
This wonderful learning journey would not have been possible without our incredible community. A huge thank you to all the parents who helped set up the booths and brought in the colourful decorations and equipment that made the day a resounding success.

What a phenomenal morning we had at Mernda Hills Christian College for our Discovery Day last Thursday. Designed specifically to help our Year 5 and 6 students step up confidently into Secondary School, the day was packed with high energy, new friendships, and plenty of excitement.
From the roaring energy of the Corliss vs. Barnett House Choir Battle at Secondary Chapel, to hands-on science experiments, rotational sport games, and campfires with s'mores, our upper primary students got a true taste of the vibrant everyday life that awaits them in our secondary school.
Discovery Day is all about building confidence and showing our students just how much they have to look forward to right here at Mernda Hills. We thank our Secondary Senior Captains for assisting on the day, embodying true leadership and collaboration. We hope this sneak peek has our Year 5s and 6s counting down the days until Year 7, and we cannot wait to see them continue to grow, belong, and thrive in our secondary community in the coming years.

Our Foundation students' favourite Friday afternoon activity, Bush School, is back! The sounds of laughter filled the air as students explored and worked together, becoming ankle-deep in thick, oozy mud.
Bush School is centred on giving children the freedom to connect with the outdoors in a creative and meaningful way. Once a week in Term 2, our Foundation classes leave the four walls of the classroom to step into a space where they can get back to nature through messy, imaginative play.
This program is inspired by the Scandinavian forest school philosophy, which values hands-on outdoor learning as a way of building resilience, problem-solving, confidence, and a strong sense of belonging. Through activities like digging in the dirt, experimenting with water, constructing shelters, and observing the world around them, students begin to develop a deeper connection to place while learning to care for God's creation.
Parents, we apologise for the washing up that follows, but please know that your children are having the time of their lives!!

Our Food Technology classroom was filled with flavour and family this week as we welcomed our honorary staff member Nonna Maria, grandmother to Year 10 student Gabby, to join our lesson. Combining Mrs Greenwell-Smith’s expert instruction with Nonna Maria’s lifelong mastery of Italian cooking, students embarked on an authentic Italian culinary journey that felt more like a trip to Italy than a typical school day. The room was completely transported to the Mediterranean with stunning projections of the Amalfi Coast on the screens and the vibrant sounds of Italian music filling the air as the students cooked.
Using pasta machines to perfect their technique, the class took great pride in crafting silky egg fettuccine and vibrant sauces made entirely from scratch, including a creamy basil pesto and a traditional passata. While the pasta required a specific recipe to follow, the students were challenged to create their sauces by taste. This taught them to trust their instincts and develop their palates by adding seasonings and ingredients to try to achieve the perfect balance of flavours.
In true Nonna style, Maria made sure there was plenty to go around and prepared extra portions that fed hungry teachers who had been drawn to the classroom by the delicious aromas. This Italian feast is part of our weekly tradition where every Monday features a new cuisine, following on from our recent and successful Mexican-inspired lesson. It was a wonderful hands-on experience that brought a true taste of Italy to our school! Thank you Nonna Maria!

The sun was shining and the energy was high on Wednesday 6 May at Bundoora Park for the SSV Whittlesea Division Cross Country. We couldn't have asked for better conditions as our team of around 40 students took to the tracks for the 3km and 5km events. Every runner gave it their all, and the results speak for themselves.
We are incredibly proud to announce that 24 of our students have officially qualified for the SSV Northern Metropolitan Region Cross Country event on June 17. It was a day filled with personal bests and grit, highlighted by Alysa’s fantastic performance taking third place in the 12-13 girls category. We also saw a strong showing across the board with several students clinching impressive fourth and fifth-place finishes. Huge congratulations to everyone who competed and represented us so well. We can't wait to see what this group achieves at the next level. Bring on the Regionals!

Our Year 1 students had a fantastic time last Friday becoming safer digital citizens with Chris and Rob from Melbourne Puppet Kerfuffle. Through the magic of puppetry and characters like Reboot the Robot, our students explored complex topics like cyber safety in a fun and digestible way.
The children learnt the importance of keeping private information safe, being kind to others online, and always speaking to a trusted adult if they see something unpleasant. A highlight was the Wheel of Cyber Safety game show, where the class practiced making strong passwords and discussed why devices should only be used in shared family spaces like the kitchen or living room. It was a wonderful morning of laughter and learning that provided our youngest learners with the tools to navigate the digital world with confidence.

We loved hosting our wonderful mums yesterday at our annual Mother's Day celebration! Although it was a cold and wet morning, we were so grateful to see so many mums join us for the occasion. The morning began with photos, morning tea, and barista-made hot drinks, providing a warm start to the festivities before we moved into a beautiful whole school chapel service. This service included a special video, a delightful performance by Year 1B, and heartfelt poems read out by our students.
We hope all the mums who attended yesterday felt truly loved and cherished. We feel incredibly lucky to have such amazing, wonderful mums in our community and we are so grateful for all that you do! Happy Mother's Day to all mothers and mother-figures and we hope you have a blessed day this Sunday. 💐
