Book Week at Mernda Primary School!
This year, Mernda Primary celebrated Book Week with the theme ‘Symphony of Stories’.
Stories have the power to transport us to new worlds, introduce us to unforgettable characters and inspire our imaginations. Throughout Book Week, our staff and students celebrated the joy of reading and the wonderful stories, authors and illustrators that bring books to life.
We loved seeing our students immerse themselves in the magic of books, including dressing up as their favourite characters for our annual Book Week Dress Up Day on the 26th of August.
Our Performing Arts Leaders prepared a special introduction for the Book Week Parade, including a wonderful musical item from our choir. While the parade was unable to go ahead, we are delighted to share some photos from the day, along with the choir's performance.
We hope you enjoy celebrating the magic of stories with us! 📖✨

On Tuesday, 11th of August, as part of our school's Intercultural Week celebrations, our Year 4 students participated in a Kung Fu Incursion. This engaging session introduced students to the history and basic techniques of Kung Fu while exploring its core values of discipline, respect, focus, and perseverance.
Led by an experienced instructor, students took part in a range of fun, age-appropriate activities that promote physical fitness, coordination, confidence, and teamwork. The incursion provided an opportunity for students to develop a greater appreciation of Chinese culture and its traditions, supporting our school's celebration of cultural diversity.

Our Year 1 students have been exploring Chinese Dragon Dancing as part of our Intercultural learning!
We have been learning about the important role of the dragon in Chinese culture and how dragons are symbols of peace, good luck and happiness . Students have enjoyed discovering the traditions, colours and meaning behind Chinese dragon dancing.
During our Open Afternoon, students had the opportunity to share their learning with their parents and families through a special collaborative dragon-making activity. Working together, students and their families designed and created colourful dragons while sharing their knowledge about the importance of dragons in Chinese culture.
It was wonderful to see our Year 1 students proudly sharing their learning, working collaboratively and celebrating culture with their families!

On Thursday 13th of August , our Grade 2 students celebrated MPS Intercultural Week with a wonderful Chinese Ribbon Dancing Incursion! 🥢🎀 Bonnie visited the Grade 2s and performed a beautiful ribbon dance before teaching us some Mandarin words and guiding us through our very own ribbon dance. The students then proudly performed their dance as a class for the rest of the cohort! What a fun way to learn about Chinese culture through language, movement and dance! ❤️💃

Grade 5 Excursion:
Exploring Chinese Culture at the Chinese Museum

What an incredible day our Grade 5 students had immersing themselves in Chinese culture at the Chinese Museum in the heart of Melbourne's C*D!

Students took part in a guided tour through the museum, discovering fascinating stories from Chinese Australian history. They tried their hand at making traditional Chinese fans and were absolutely mesmerised by the stunning Chinese dragon winding its way up through the museum halls! This excursion also made meaningful connections to our Gold Rush Inquiry Unit, as students learned about the significant contributions of Chinese migrants during the Victorian Gold Rush. Seeing artefacts, stories and exhibits brought their classroom learning to life and helped them make real-world connections to the history they have been exploring this term.

To top off the day, our students took a wander through the bustling streets of Chinatown, soaking up the sights, sounds and atmosphere of one of Melbourne's most iconic cultural precincts.

A huge thank you to the Chinese Museum for hosting our students and giving them such a rich, hands-on learning experience. Days like these bring history and culture to life in a way no classroom lesson can!
