A late ADHD diagnosis can feel like finally finding the missing piece.
And sometimes, once the relief settles, the grief arrives.
Not because you don’t want your diagnosis.
But because you suddenly understand just how hard things were when you were trying to navigate them without the right support or understanding.
You can feel relieved.
You can feel angry.
You can feel sad.
You can feel grateful.
Sometimes all of it exists at once.
And if you’re grieving the years you spent thinking you weren’t enough…
I hope you can offer that younger version of yourself the compassion they deserved all along.

Me: I don’t need to write that down.

My brain: Correct.

Also my brain three hours later:

“We had information. What happened to the information?” 😂

Some ADHD quirks are hard to explain.

Like owning seven water bottles...

Having a favourite...

Taking it everywhere...

And then realising at 4pm that you’ve had approximately three sips all day. 😂

The water bottle? Present.

The hydration? Missing in action.

It’s basically an emotional support accessory at this point. 💧😂

Please tell me I’m not alone.

Weekend goals for the ADHD brain:

🔋 Recharge
🛋️ Do less
☕ Drink something fun
🧠 Let the brain have a minute
🚫 Ignore at least one unnecessary responsibility

Rest isn’t being lazy.

Sometimes the most productive thing an ADHD brain can do is absolutely nothing.

Happy weekend, neurospicy friends.

This is a safe space. 😂

No judgement. No explanations required.

Just pick your poison… and tell us which one your ADHD brain is currently refusing to acknowledge. 👇

Late diagnosis taught me something I wish I’d learned much earlier: I don’t need everyone else’s approval to live my life differently.

For years, I was very good at doing things the “right” way.

Being successful.
Being productive.
Keeping everyone happy.
Trying to fit the mould.

Then came the ADHD diagnosis and a slightly inconvenient realisation:

Maybe the mould was never made for me. 😂

These days?

My life.
My choices.
My mistakes.
My lessons.

You don’t have to understand every decision I make.

You don’t even have to agree with it.

And respectfully… it’s not your business.

Turns out, growing into yourself after a late diagnosis can be a little bit liberating.

My ADHD brain has apparently decided that urgency is a productivity strategy.

Give me six weeks and I’ll think about the task.

Give me six hours and suddenly I’m focused, efficient and questioning why I haven’t always lived like this.

Is it healthy? Probably not.

Does it work? Annoyingly… sometimes. 😂

The goal is learning how to create a little momentum before the mild crisis becomes an actual crisis.

Because my nervous system does not need another character-building experience.

Sometimes I’m listening to you.
I’m also noticing the noise in the background.
Then I see something out the window.
Then I remember something I forgot to do.
Then I realise I’ve stopped listening.
Then I have to mentally rewind the conversation and find the correct channel again. 😂

It’s not that I don’t care about what you’re saying.

I really am trying to listen.

My brain just occasionally changes channels without asking permission.

And honestly, the amount of energy that can go into quietly finding my way back is something you can’t always see from the outside.

So if you’ve ever had someone say, “Were you even listening?”...

Yep.

I was.

I just took a very scenic route getting there.

Some ADHDers don’t have a phone anxiety problem…

We have a phone call information problem. 😂

If you haven’t told me why you’re calling, my brain is immediately preparing for the worst.

Leave a voicemail.

Give me context.

Let me mentally rehearse my response.

THEN we can talk. 📞

Honestly, voicemail is just a briefing document for my nervous system. 😂

Your calendar says 9am.

Your ADHD brain says, “Cute. But what’s the battery percentage?” 😂

Figure out when your energy tends to peak and save the big stuff for then.

And for the low-energy days?

Have a bare minimum plan.

Eat. Shower. Do the essential thing. Survive.

You don’t have to fight your brain every day. Sometimes you just need to work with the battery you’ve got. 🔋
