VOICE OF LELE: 💙💚💙 🎶🎤🎵Today we had the pleasure of welcoming the remarkable Voice of Lele to our Jackson Hall, to perform a concert for Years 3-6, and another for K-2 and our friends from Little Nippers Day Care. Lele, a proud Melanesian, singer, songwriter, and Refugee; was an amazing talent and
absolute pleasure to have at Merimbula Public School.
Today, she graced us with her incredible voice and brought a powerful message of
diversity, inclusion, and resilience to our multicultural education programs.
Lele, is a refugee, proud West Papuan Woman, and mother of four daughters, wife to Australian World Music Star, Mitch Tambo, and advocate for refugee women in Australia and the freedom of West Papua.
Lele was first introduced to music through her late father. A strong cultural song man who not only influenced Lele’s musical path but planted the seed that you can share your culture and songs with the world. As the lead singer and composer of the Black Brothers Band, she/they not only filled stadiums across Pacifica and Indonesia but paved the way for many other Melanesian artists. With a passion for music and commitment to raising awareness of West Papa, Lele and her sisters followed in their father’s footsteps and created their own group called The Black Sistaz.
Lele had our students dancing, singing and celebrating cultural diversity and resilience throughout her performances. Speaking five languages, Lele told us about when moving to Australia, the only English words she knew were “My Little Pony”. Lele sang to us in many languages. Lele encouraged all children to listen to, try to understand and celebrate each other’s diversity and stories. She did this brilliantly.
We were so lucky to have Lele perform at our school, celebrating culture, friendship and belonging. Thank you, Lele, for an amazing educational experience and for an absolutely awesome way to start our week of learning at Merimbula Public School! This was a true “Symphony of Stories”! 💙💚💙🎶🎤🎵
