There comes a point where you stop asking why someone did what they did.

Not because it doesn’t matter.

But because their behaviour has already answered the question.

People can explain themselves in all sorts of ways.

Stress.
Pressure.
Misunderstanding.
Bad timing.
Not meaning it that way.

And sometimes, maybe that is true.

But there are also moments when something in you goes still.

Because you know.
You have seen enough.
And that is where the shift happens.

Not in rage.
Not in revenge.
Not in needing everyone else to understand your side.

Just in the quiet decision:
I will decide what access you get to me.

Access to my time.
My trust.
My energy.
My generosity.
My inner world.

Because once someone has shown you what they are willing to do with those things, you are allowed to change the terms.
That is not cruelty.

That is self-respect finally getting a seat at the table.

The past 4 ½ years have challenged me in ways that I seriously could have never imagined.

I reflect often on what has come to pass and the impact that it has had on my partner and me.

There have been many lessons along the way, but I think the most polarising for me is when people show you who they truly are.

From my observations, they don’t even realise they are doing it. It’s almost like they have been walking around wearing a mask and a cloak.

🙅‍♀️They don’t show you who they are through honesty.

🙅‍♀️They replace conversation with punishment, physical avoidance, isolation.

🙅‍♀️Their words become weapons because they have stopped hiding.

When the mask slips, the cloak falls, and you get a glimpse behind that curtain.

🔴Not of their pain – of their intent.

And once you see that, don’t unsee it.

The truth rarely arrives politely.

Sometimes it kicks the door open and dares you to pretend you didn’t experience it.

But here’s the gift in it, if you can call it that.

Once someone shows you what they are prepared to do with their anger, their silence, their power or their position – you are no longer guessing.

You may still grieve it.

You may still question how you missed it.

But you are not blind anymore.

And that clarity, however brutal, becomes a line in the sand.

Not for revenge.

Not for bitterness.

But for choosing, from that moment on, who gets access to your trust, your generosity, your energy – and your future.

Living beside someone whose brain is wired toward threat doesn't have to be hard.

When we think about it in evolutionary terms, it was really useful.

"Maybe don't sleep in that cave…….there might be a bear in it."

The issue is that modern life isn't full of real bears, but the brain acts like it is. It's self preservation.

But how do you handle things when the accompanying commentary feel so heavy and negative?

1. Stop trying to convert them into a positive person.
This is real trap. You will go insane trying to turn a natural pessimist into a motivational speaker.
Our cognitive filters are deeply wired. The goal isn't to change the filter.
The goal is to manage the impact on you.

2. Lightly name it. Sometime just calling it out resets the dynamic.
Not confrontationally, perhaps use a little humour.
"daily product review completed, I hear it's a 6 out of 10!"

3. Don't enter the complaint loop.
More often than not you instinctively respond. You explain, you try to fix, you defend, you debate.
That all feeds the loop.
Instead, acknowledge and move on. No debate, no emotional energy.

4. Protect your emotional environment
This is important. If someone has a negative bias, you cannot let their internal weather become your weather.
Think of it like this ……. Their mood is their climate system. You are not responsible for stabilising it.
You can listen without absorbing.

Some times those that we love and spend time with have to empty out all the 'bear stuff' before they can find and acknowledge the good stuff. They need to throw all the bears out of the cave first….then they can sit down.

if an adult cuts off their parent,
imagine the heartbreak it took to get there.

nobody wakes up one day and says,
“i think i’ll cut my family off for fun.”

it’s not a trend. it’s not a mood.
it’s the ending of years, sometimes decades,
of being hurt, unheard, or dismissed.

when an adult child walks away,
it’s because the boundaries they set were ignored.
because the same wounds kept being reopened.
because the people who should’ve been a safe place… weren’t.

and they are not obligated to keep accepting disrespect
just because “you’re their mom” or “you’re their dad.”

so if one day they decide they’re better off without you,
it’s because the pain of staying
finally outweighed the pain of leaving.

and that’s not betrayal.
that’s survival.
