There are just a few tickets left for our Father’s Day Breakfast!

Join us on Friday 4 September as we celebrate the important role fathers and father figures play in the lives of our young people.

Our guest speaker, Tim Lamb, List Manager at Melbourne Football Club, will share reflections from his career journey, including resilience, leadership and the important role parents play in encouraging young people to recognise their strengths, explore opportunities and find their own path.

A new chapter of student leadership was announced at this morning’s Term 3 College Assembly, with our 2027 Student Leadership Team and House Leaders revealed.

Leadership at Kilbreda is founded on service, courage and a commitment to making a positive difference. Our Student Leaders lead by example, demonstrating our College values through their words and actions and embracing leadership with purpose, Strength and Kindliness.

Our 2027 House Leaders will bring energy, enthusiasm and a strong sense of belonging to College life. They will inspire House spirit, encourage participation and help unite students across all year levels.

At this morning’s Term 3 College Assembly, we were delighted to announce our four College Captains for 2027.

• College Co-Captain - Emma G
Emma leads with grace, enthusiasm and joy. Through Community Action, SRC, Peer Support, and as a Student Ambassador and Class Captain, she has shown a wonderful ability to connect with others, take initiative and bring people together.

• College Co-Captain - Matilda E
Matilda’s leadership is characterised by courage, authenticity and personal growth. As a Student Ambassador and an outstanding contributor to our sporting program, she has represented Kilbreda with warmth, pride and generosity.

• College Vice Captain - Amelie B
Amelie leads through service, encouragement and a genuine desire to make a difference. Her contributions to Living Justice, the Student Ambassador program and the performing arts reflect her deep care for our community.

• College Vice Captain - Zara S
Zara is a compassionate and humble leader who consistently puts others first. Through Peer Support, SRC, Community Action, the Student Ambassador program and the arts, she has helped others feel welcomed, connected and valued.

Together, Emma, Matilda, Amelie and Zara bring different strengths and experiences to their leadership, united by a commitment to our community and our motto of Strength and Kindliness.

This morning’s Term 3 College Assembly was a wonderful way to celebrate the achievements, talents and leadership of our Kilbreda community. A special thank you to our Assembly host, Eliza S, for confidently leading us through the morning.

We reflected on the highlights of the term and proudly celebrated the recipients of our Term 3 Principal Awards. These awards recognise students who embody the heart of Kilbreda, demonstrating Strength and Kindliness through courage, compassion and integrity, and helping to foster a genuine sense of belonging. Congratulations to all of our award recipients.

Principal Stephanie Smyth also reflected on the importance of Justice, our College theme for 2026, reminding us that justice calls us to listen, notice those who may be overlooked, stand up for what is right and ensure everyone feels seen, valued and included.

We also celebrated the students who will take on leadership roles in 2027, with the announcement of the Co-Captains, Vice-Captains, Student Leadership Team and House Leaders. (Separate posts to follow.) Congratulations to all students who stepped forward to lead our community with Strength and Kindliness.

The morning also showcased the incredible musical talents of our students, with performances from the Percussion Ensemble and Theatre Orchestra, including excerpts from The Phantom of the Opera.

Our VCE VM students put their entrepreneurial skills into action at their Market Day last week, creating and running nine student businesses selling everything from slime and squishies to cookies, iced lattes, stickers, lip scrub and lolly pop bouquets.

Each student received a $20 loan, with the option to combine funds with classmates to grow their business budget. The students developed valuable business and entrepreneurial skills while exploring social enterprise, using their profits to support Wellsprings for Women, Saltbush Balnarring and the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP).

The lunchtime Market was a hive of activity, with a large crowd getting behind the businesses and voting for their favourite stall.

• Most Sustainable - Charmed by Ruby and Grace - Ruby H and Grace S
• Most Profitable - Squeeze Me! - Samara G, Eve D, Gemma C and Kiara L

Together, the businesses generated an impressive $1,759.80 in sales. After repaying the $560 in loans, an incredible $1,199.80 will be donated to the three charities.

Well done to our students, and to teacher Felicia Limogiannis for guiding and supporting them throughout the project and encouraging them to turn their ideas into real-world business venture.

On our Student Free Day last week, 43 creative Kilbreda students from across all year levels swapped their usual routines for an ambitious challenge - writing and illustrating an entire book in just one day.

Working in seven teams, students had a 5,000-word limit and a list of quirky creative challenges to incorporate into their stories, including characters such as a TV star and orangutan, and words like ‘elastic’ and ‘clumsy’. The result? A Library buzzing with ideas, laughter, collaboration and plenty of imagination!

As part of the annual Write a Book in a Day competition, students have the opportunity to make a difference, raising funds for The Kids’ Cancer Project and donating their completed books to children undergoing cancer treatment.

A huge thank you to our wonderful Library team for supporting the day, and to our students who gave up their Student Free Day to create, collaborate and contribute to such a meaningful cause.

Congratulations to our Year 11 Food Studies students Jessica G, Lara M, Stefanie R and Alyssa V who yesterday were awarded a Gold Medal at the SEGAP Teen Chef Competition. Below is a reflection from them about their experience:

“Yesterday the four of us had the opportunity to participate in the SEGAP Teen Chef Competition. Under the guidance of our Food Studies teacher, Ms Vaughan, we spent the past two months developing and refining our recipes in preparation for the event.

We were finally able to put our skills and hard work to the test. As part of the competition, we were required to present both a main course and a dessert to a panel of judges from the Australian Culinary Federation.

Our main course consisted of Chicken Involtini served with sweet potato mash and roasted garlic parmesan Brussels sprouts. After months of testing, refining and perfecting our dishes, we were proud to present our final creations to the judges.

For dessert, we prepared Sicilian donuts paired with a rich tiramisu cream, garnished with fresh raspberries and edible flowers. The donut recipe was generously shared with us by Ms Malignaggi, who assured us that her mother's spirit would be watching over us throughout the competition.

At the conclusion 90-minute cooking time, our efforts were rewarded with Gold Medals, an achievement awarded to competitors who receive between 90 and 99 points. This recognition was a rewarding outcome for the dedication, teamwork and perseverance we demonstrated throughout the entire process.

Our Year 8 students recently stepped out of their comfort zones and into an unforgettable three-day adventure for their camp at Golden Valleys Adventure Camp in Flinders.

From the giant swing and high ropes course to challenging climbs, high-platform jumps and walks through the National Forest, students were encouraged to challenge themselves, build resilience and grow in confidence and independence.

Year 8 Level Leader Bill Fitzsimons praised the cohort for their courage: “For those who found everything easy, well done. For those who found everything hard but gave it a go and completed the challenges - you should be exultant!”

More than just an adventure, camp was an opportunity for every student to discover what they were capable of. We hope they returned to school knowing that what once felt like a limit can be the first step towards a new achievement.

A huge thank you to Year 8 Level Leader, Bill Fitzsimons, for his outstanding leadership in coordinating the camps, and to all the staff who generously gave their time, encouragement and care to support our students.

This week, our students got creative, developed practical skills and explored innovative ways to reuse materials as part of Design and Technology Week.

Highlights included our Teen Chef and VM students putting their Food Technology skills to work, making and selling delicious Italian donuts in support of charity. Our Textiles students and staff also shared their skills, showing students how to create stylish purses using recycled materials.

It was a great opportunity for our students to put their creativity and practical skills into action while supporting sustainability and our community

Today our Year 8 students stepped back in time as part of their History studies, immersing themselves in the sights, sounds and stories of the Middle Ages during Medieval Day with the team from Medieval Education.

The day brought history to life through a range of hands-on and interactive activities, including archery, medieval games, a weapons and armour display and an intriguing look at crime and punishment in medieval times. A highlight for many students was taking part in a dramatic battle re-enactment of the Battle of Hastings, putting their newfound knowledge into action!

It was a fun-filled day of learning, discovery and plenty of medieval adventure.

A big thank you to our Humanities staff for creating such a memorable learning experience for our Year 8 students.
