The Mentone Grammar community retains a deep and lasting bond with all our students who have gone on to serve their country in times of war. Of the 109 Mentonians who saw active service during WWII, sadly 12 did not return. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten by the members of our School. It is in a very special sense that we say, Labore et Honore.

We look forward to welcoming you on this important occasion.

20 YEARS OF COEDUCATION | FROM KEYSIE TO THE G

From the ovals of Mentone Grammar to the biggest stages in Australian football, generations of Mentonians have taken their love of the game to extraordinary heights.

As the School celebrates 20 Years of Coeducation, we’re looking back at how football at Mentone Grammar has evolved, and the talented players who have gone from pulling on the School guernsey to competing at the elite level.

From AFLW premiership player and Melbourne captain Kate H**e, to current AFL stars Ollie Florent, Joel Amartey, Mitch Owens and Josh Lai, their journeys are a powerful reflection of talent, determination and the opportunities created through a shared sporting culture.

They trained on the same ovals, shared leadership spaces, and grew up in a School where ambition wasn’t defined by gender.

Read the full article on our website and discover the Mentonians who have taken their football from the Keysie to the national stage.

VALE | MARK JAYASUNDERA (CLASS OF 1981)

18 July 1964 – 3 September 2026

The Mentone Grammar community is saddened to hear of the passing of Mark Jayasundera (Class of 1981), remembered by his schoolmates as a talented sportsman, loyal friend and much-loved character.

Mark had a lifelong love of cricket and was a gifted leg-spin bowler, perhaps even an early “spin king” before fellow Mentone boy Shane Warne. He also represented the School in hockey, graduating in the year Mentone Grammar claimed its first and only hockey premiership.

Former Principal and teammate Mal Cater (Class of 1981) remembers: “Mark was an enthusiastic hockey player who, like me, graduated in the year the School won its first and only hockey premiership, which was a source of great excitement for us all.”

His school years were also filled with the stories that become treasured memories, from his dad chasing down the School bus when Mark was running late, to schoolboy mischief with friends, and even losing a front tooth while charging the opposition on the hockey field.

Known to his closest friends as ‘Lal’, Mark was laconic, direct and light-hearted, with a wonderful ability to take life in his stride. He was also a great dancer, having first learned at joint dance classes with Mentone Girls’ Grammar before later mastering his own version of Michael Jackson’s moonwalk.

Beyond school, Mark became a successful entrepreneur, building a thriving car rental business in Dandenong that operated for more than 30 years, alongside his work as a property investor. He later retired to enjoy life with his family.

Mark’s friends and the wider Mentone Grammar community will remember him fondly and extend their deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.

PUNTING ON THE BIG STAGE

Congratulations to Niall Hayes (Class of 2024) on making his NCAA debut as Louisville's punter on 6 September 2026 at the Music City Kickoff in front of a packed crowd.

Taking on ninth-ranked Ole Miss, Niall recorded five punts for 198 yards, averaging 39.6 yards per punt.

In a thrilling contest, Ole Miss converted a 48-yard field goal as time expired to secure a 41–38 victory. Despite the result, Niall and his teammates showed they can go toe-to-toe with one of the nation's top teams and will take plenty of confidence into the remainder of the season.

Well done Niall and we look forward to following your punting journey! 🏈

20 YEARS OF COEDUCATION | COMMUNITY & SERVICE

As Mentone Grammar celebrates 20 years of coeducation, we’re reflecting on how the values of collaboration, empathy and respect continue to shape our Mentonians beyond the School gates.

For Daniel Maitland (Class of 2010), Founder of Training with Mates and TWM Stride for Stroke, his passion for community began at Mentone Grammar, where he ran a gym program for staff and students. Today, TWM Stride for Stroke has raised nearly $300,000 to support stroke survivors, research and vital resources.

💬 “The School instilled values of fairness, honesty, kindness, and always giving your best effort – values that guide every decision I make in business and community work.”

For Amelia Gardner (Class of 2016), Mentone Grammar fostered a strong sense of compassion and service, values she now brings to her career in child protection services, supporting vulnerable children and families.

💬 “The School encouraged me to think beyond my own experience and to recognise the value of giving back to the community.”

While their paths are different, Daniel and Amelia share a common foundation: using empathy, connection and service to make a meaningful difference in their communities.
