Your child can tell you the sound for every letter in sat… but still get stuck when it’s time to read the word. 😩

That’s because hearing or saying the sounds is one skill. Blending them into a word is another.

Try this together:

1️⃣ Begin with at. Say each sound, then slide them together: “aaat.”

2️⃣ Add s. Stretch the sounds without stopping between them: “sssaaat.”

3️⃣ Shorten it until your child says “sat” naturally.

Then try sit and listen for whether they can blend it without hearing you do it first. That’s the progress you’re looking for. 🙌

👀 How’d you go? 👀

Pronouncing letter sounds correctly can be tricky and it often takes a lot of practice. If you went to school in the 80s and 90s like I did this was NOT how we learnt to say our sounds.

One of the most common mistakes is adding an extra “uh” to a sound, such as saying “luh” for /l/. Another is not recognising the two different sounds of /a/ which is dependent on which sound follows it. I’ve learn recently though this may not be how all countries say this. 🇦🇺

These small differences matter because extra or incorrect sounds make it harder for children to blend words accurately.
