Staughton College

Staughton College Staughton College is a government secondary school located in Melton South for engaged
students. This is a very important first step.

Our motto Try Persevere Achieve forms the basis of the idea that each student is provided with the opportunity at Staughton College to try, develop and grow intellectually, physically and emotionally over their time at the school. We encourage perseverance and see it as the pathway to achievement. Our year 7 – 12, coeducational, single-campus school provides a friendly environment where boys and g

irls of all ages can learn to live and work together. We value the sense of community among teachers and students alike. Older students and student leaders provide valuable role models for the younger and, in turn, they learn about the responsibilities of adulthood and the skills necessary to contribute positively to the community and the work place. All learn about socially responsible and respectful behaviour, about courtesy, about the way we should treat each other and about accepting responsibility for one's actions. Our Rights and responsibilities are based on respect, learn and safety. The College provides structures to support a transition from Primary school including core rooms and core teachers. Our experience is that it doesn't take long before students feel confident and comfortable at school. We also have high expectations of our students' learning. Around those high expectations, we build structure, teaching practice, organisation and procedures. We expect students to take on the challenge of continuously improving upon their learning and participating in the broad range of programs and extra-curricular activities on offer. This is supported by continuous evaluation and improvement of subjects, courses of study, and the way in which teaching and learning occurs. The academic achievements of our students are exemplified by their VCE results, VCAL completion and the tertiary, further education and training pathways they take up after graduation. We expect and value parent support for school programs and policies in helping to maintain a working, productive environment. The potential, creativity and spirit of our young people continue to be an inspiration and a source of confidence in the future. Their commitment to achieving high academic results while being fine citizens of the school community, the support of families and the talents and dedication of our staff make Staughton College a great place to come to every day.

Dear Families and Students,

The safety and wellbeing of every member of our school community remains our highest priority. We would like to remind all students that when arriving at or leaving the College, they must use the designated pedestrian safety crossing on Wilsons Road.

Using the supervised crossing is not optional. It is an important safety expectation and forms part of our collective duty of care to ensure everyone can travel to and from school safely. Crossing at undesignated locations significantly increases the risk of serious injury and places both students and motorists in potentially dangerous situations.

We ask all students to take responsibility for making safe choices by:

- Always using the pedestrian safety crossing on Wilsons Road.
- Following the directions of crossing supervisors at all times.
- Remaining alert and avoiding distractions such as mobile phones when crossing the road.
- Looking carefully for traffic, even when using the crossing.

Road safety is everyone's responsibility. By making safe decisions each day, we can all contribute to a safer environment for ourselves, our friends, our families and the wider community.

Thank you for your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and respectful school environment.

Dear parents, guardians & carers,

Staughton College has been advised that a national test of AusAlert will happen across Australia on Monday 27 July at 2 pm.

AusAlert is a new, national emergency warning system. It sends warning messages to compatible mobile devices during emergencies, to keep people informed so they can act quickly. The Australian Government plans to launch AusAlert in October 2026.

On Monday 27 July at 2 pm, all compatible mobile devices will receive a Critical Alert. Compatible mobile devices include phones, tablets, smart watches, safety watches and some vehicle devices. These will vibrate and make a loud, siren-like warning sound for about 10 seconds. This will happen even if they are on silent or do not disturb. The message will clearly state that it is a test. No action is required from the test.

To minimise disruption, student phones and smart devices should always be switched off and stored securely in lockers during the school day. Students who use their mobile phone as part of a documented exception can continue to do so. If appropriate, they can turn their phone off during the test. You can learn more at AusAlert: children and teens. Information is also available in other languages.

Safe phones
AusAlert may increase risk for people experiencing violence, especially if they live with someone who uses violence. Alerts may expose safety devices.

If you or someone you know has a hidden device, the best way to stay safe during the test is to:
• turn off your mobile device or put it in aeroplane mode
• keep your device off or in aeroplane mode for 24 hours.

Silent mode and do not disturb will not stop the alert. For more information, please refer to the Staying safe with AusAlert page.

Thank you,

Staughton College
