Feeling the heat? ☀️

You and your baby might need a little extra care to stay cool and hydrated.

Your breastmilk is amazing - it changes to meet your baby’s needs, even in the hottest weather.

“Parenting has nothing to do with perfection. Perfection isn’t even the goal, not for us, not for our children. Learning together to live well in an imperfect world, loving each other despite or even because of our imperfections, and growing as humans while we grow our little humans, those are the goals of gentle parenting. So don’t ask yourself at the end of the day if you did everything right. Ask yourself what you learned and how well you loved, then grow from your answer. That is perfect parenting.”
L.R. Knost - The Gentle Parent: Positive, Practical, Effective Discipline.

Wonderful, accessible strategy for parent and child alike💜

Many of us find ourselves feeling overwhelmed with worry as a new parent. Often when we are finding this happening a lot it’s because we are not really present. It’s because we are ruminating over things that have already happened (our mind is in the past) or we are worrying about and perhaps predicting what might happen (our mind is in the future).

A helpful way to ground ourselves when this is happening is to pay attention to safe cues that surround us. If you find your mind running away with worries, try this simple technique. Look around the room / environment you are in and notice 5 things you can see - name them to yourself. Then 4 things you can hear - this might take a little longer. 3 things you can feel - it might be your clothes, objects (really explore the feeling with your hands) or it can be noticing the weight of your body on the ground / chair. Next 2 things you can smell (or imagine a smell you love), finally 1 thing you can taste (or imagine the taste of something you love).

It takes a few minutes to go through, and during this time you are basically telling your nervous system that it is surrounded by lovely safe things and therefore it’s ok to turn off your fight or flight. It’s a great technique.

And as a bonus…. This is a great technique to do with toddlers or older children when they are on the verge of a meltdown / are dysregulated. It distracts, it engages them in the grounding and it’s a lovely game to do together.

Are you being told that your baby is manipulating you? Crying for attention?

It’s amazing what people think a young baby’s brain is capable of, when it’s not even capable of moving their limbs in a coordinated way to grab something!
In order for someone to manipulate you they need to be able to do the following things:

1. Know what they want to happen in this situation (Young babies don’t know what happened 1 hour ago or what’s going to happen next - they just know how they feel in this momen).

2. Know what you want to happen in this situation (Young babies don’t even know you are a separate person or have brain processes which are different from theirs!)

3. Know what to do in order to change your thought process to do what they want (Again - how can they do that if they don’t even know that you have thoughts? )

It takes years for babies to be able to consciously put the steps in place to try to manipulate situations. Years.
If your young baby is crying to be held - it’s because they need it at that moment. Not because they are trying to make you do something

Another hormone talking!

CCK (full name - cholecystokinin) is a hormone which makes a baby feel full and sleepy). CCK rises as a baby sucks and during the feed it surges so high that it often makes them drift off to sleep. This surge lasts about 10 mins and then drops back to base levels again. This can cause baby to wake up again, feeling hungry and wanting to latch back on. Have you found that? Maybe you’ve even put your baby down in a cot or basket after they’ve drifted off, thinking that they are soundly asleep, only to find that they woke 10 mins later and want to feed again?

After the milk empties from the stomach into the intestine babies have another big surge of CCK which lasts much longer (30-60 mins this time) and this allows babies to fall into a longer sleep. So if your baby wakes a few mins after a feed and wants to feed again - don’t worry. It’s likely just their CCK talking. It caused them to fall asleep before they were completely finished. Pop them back on the breast and allow them to finish off the feed. It’s likely that after a short time back on the breast to finish the feed, milk will be reaching the intestine and they‘ll drift into that longer sleep.
