Ahead of our event today with Prof Mitch Weiss, of St Jude Children's Research Hospital, on research directions in sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassaemia, check out today's news on SCD being added to the newborn bloodspot screening program.
Australian Sickle Cell Advocacy founder Agnes Nsofwa says her daughter Mapalo's life would have been vastly different had newborn screening existed 17 years ago.
“She grew up in the hospital,” Agnes told Sarah Booth of the Herald Sun. "I’m very excited to see that other kids won’t go through what we went through.”
Prof Andrew Perkin of the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases will host today's event at the Alfred Innovation and Education Hub, 75 Commercial Road, from 2:00-3:00pm. details: https://www.monash.edu/medicine/news/events/2026/public-seminar-sickle-cell-disease-and-thalassaemia,-with-visiting-us-professor-mitch-weiss

Every Victorian newborn can now get screened for this condition
The ‘heel prick’ test offered to Victorian babies will now screen for another rare, but serious condition, paving the way for life-changing, early diagnoses.

Do you know or care for a child with sickle cell disease (SCD) or thalassaemia?
This Thursday, we’re holding a public talk with visiting US expert, Professor Mitchell Weiss, from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. He’ll talk about treatments, current research, and what this all means for families and carers.
Host Professor Andrew Perkins is a clinical haematologist and researcher at the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases, at Monash University’s School of Translational Medicine, and Alfred Health (Bayside Health).
Right now, the multi-million dollar cost of even a single course of gene therapy puts it out of reach for governments, insurers and families … but there are things we can do to advance research into new and improved treatments (see carousel).
Join us at Monash University's Alfred campus tomorrow (not Clayton!), to find out more about what the future holds for management of these chronic conditions. Members of the public and clinicians are welcome.
Special thanks to Australian Sickle Cell Advocacy Inc (ASCA) and Thalassaemia and Sickle Cell Australia (TASCA).
