What does Community Capability look like in action?

It happens through the experiences children have as part of their school community.

When children have opportunities to participate, receive from others, contribute and positively influence, they begin to understand both what they can gain from being part of a community and the role they can play in strengthening it.

House Communities provide wonderful opportunities for children to experience this throughout their primary school years.

More than a House T-shirt 💛💚💙❤️

A House T-shirt might be something children wear, but what it represents can be so much more.

When children put on their House colours, they have a visible reminder that they are part of something bigger than themselves.

This is my House.
This is my community.
I belong here.

And through the experiences they share as part of their House Community - participating together, encouraging one another, contributing their ideas and celebrating together - that sense of belonging grows.

Over time, children begin to recognise something else:

I have something to contribute.

That’s an important part of developing Community Capability.

House colours and T-shirts are one part of building a strong House identity. It’s the experiences, relationships and opportunities to contribute that give those colours meaning.

At Our House Spirit, we love helping schools create a House identity that children feel proud to be part of.

What if House Spirit Day became more than just a day on the school calendar?

When student leaders are given the opportunity to plan experiences that bring their House Community together, they learn that leadership is about positively influencing the experiences others have.

By listening to Student and Community Voice, planning inclusive activities and creating opportunities for every child to participate, House Spirit Day becomes much more than an event.

It becomes an authentic leadership experience.

The memories children take away matter.
So do the skills they develop while creating those experiences for others.

Our House Spirit Day Workshop supports schools to empower student leaders to plan meaningful, inclusive and engaging whole-school experiences that strengthen belonging, participation and connection.

Because thriving school communities are intentionally developed.

Every memorable school event starts with an idea. At Our House Spirit, we guide students through The House Spirit Leadership Cycle - a simple process that helps them dream, plan, lead and reflect as they create an event for their whole school.
But the real magic happens during the planning.
When student leaders are trusted to design, organise and deliver an event, they develop so much more than organisational skills.
✨ Confidence
✨ Communication
✨ Teamwork
✨ Problem-solving
✨ Leadership
At Our House Spirit, we believe the journey is just as important as the event itself.
Because today's planners become tomorrow's leaders.

How active is student voice in your school?
Students often have valuable ideas—but without a simple system in place, those ideas don’t always lead to action.
One easy way to strengthen student voice:
Create a Student Suggestion Station where students can share ideas for:
• Lunchtime activities
• School events
• House competitions
Then give your student leaders responsibility for reviewing and implementing the best ideas.
Student voice isn’t just about listening—it’s about creating opportunities for students to lead.
This is a simple strategy that can make a big difference.
