🎶Do you know the History of the Bouzouki? 🇬🇷

Did you know the beloved bouzouki has a history that stretches back over a century?

The modern Greek bouzouki began to take shape in the early 1900s, evolving from older long-necked string instruments brought to Greece by migrants from Asia Minor. These instruments were influenced by the Turkish saz and other Middle Eastern lutes, which over time were adapted by Greek musicians and instrument makers.

By the 1920s and 1930s, the bouzouki became the signature instrument of Rebetiko music, the soulful urban folk music often called the “Greek blues.” Its powerful sound and expressive playing style quickly captured the hearts of audiences across Greece.

Originally, the bouzouki had three pairs of strings (the trichordo). Later, in the 1950s, a four-course version (tetrachordo) was introduced, expanding its musical range and bringing the instrument into mainstream Greek music.

Today, the bouzouki is one of the most iconic symbols of Greek culture, heard in tavernas, concerts, festivals, and music schools around the world. 🎵
