📣 Let’s talk about the crisis in the early childhood sector!

Over the last year we’ve been working hard alongside early childhood professionals, whistleblowers and investigative journalists to expose the flaws in this increasingly corporatised sector. The Greens are determined to keep fighting for the early childhood sector we deserve - one that puts the dignity, safety and rights of children and professionals above all else.

Join me and a panel of experts and early childhood professionals for a conversation about what’s gone wrong, how it got like this, and how we can work to fix it together.

📆 Monday 17 November
⏰ 6.30pm AEDT
📍online via Zoom

This event is intended to be an inclusive space for anyone interested in joining the conversation.

Music is essential

Last year I attended a webinar hosted by In Hope entitled ‘Predators Hiding in Plain Sight’.

I would like to share a few things that the presenter shared.

⚠️ Content of interest to predators (COITP) included:

- Children in swimsuits
- Pageantry photos
- Children doing gymnastics
- Children in diapers
- Children in the swimming pool
- Back to school photos
- PLUS everyday family photos

‼️ Predators are driving minors to self-produce content on:

- In gaming environments, which are often described as the ‘modern day playground’.
- Mainstream social media — predators are posting and browsing content of interest, finding like-minded individuals to trade CSAM with, and finding victims to move off-site to messenger platforms.
- Messenger apps — including encrypted platforms to communicate with victims.

⛔️ When a predator contacts a child, they will try to lure the child to an encrypted messenger platform.

Algorithms play a role in recommending more content, i.e., if a predator has searched for ‘girl gymnastics’, the algorithm will push more of the same type of content.

Predators can find other like-minded individuals in the comments section.

In live streaming, predators will often ask a child to:

- Do a handstand
- Pout at the camera
- Blow a bubble gum
- Can you draw with your feet?
- Put the camera at this angle

‼️‼️ I cannot reiterate how important it is to have any social media account set to PRIVATE.

❌ NEVER share images of your children on public accounts. Keep in mind that once you post an image, you lose control over it.

❌ Please do not include photos of your children in your profile photo.

🙏 Please supervise your children online.

❌ Children should NEVER use devices in private spaces.

❌ Children should NEVER communicate online with anyone they do not know in the ‘real’ world.

Thoughtful prompts

We NEED our children to have opportunities for or play. By allowing them to have fun and take part in activities outside their (and our 😉) comfort zone we are actually helping to build resilience and encouraging problem-solving and decision making skills. We all want to raise assertive and empowered children, and providing environments and activities and assisting a child to choose risk will go a long way toward helping a child develop the skills and knowledge to succeed in their futures.
