Win for Law Students:
Tutorials Restored for Semester 2
After sustained advocacy, tutorials will return across all core units with the exception of Torts which now has a cap of 30 students per workshop. Group assignments will be also be capped at 30% with 5 members max.
Slide 2:
The MSA has been advocating against the Law Faculty's tutorial cuts since they were first announced in October 2025.
Class sizes of 120 students have significantly impacted teaching quality, classroom engagement, and the overall student experience this semester. We have heard this loud and clear from Law students from day one, and have campaigned since for a fairer deal.
The MSA has been pushing this issue on multiple fronts; through direct advocacy, meetings with senior staff, and even in national media, we have called on the University to change course. This was in addition to our work alongside the LSS, who have run their own student survey
Slide 3:
and engaged the Faculty directly, and with the support of student
representatives on University Council and Academic Board.
When the Law Faculty repeatedly delayed engaging with students on these cuts, the MSA escalated the issue to the highest levels of the University. However, we did not stop there, pushing this story into the national media.
Tutorials will return across all core units with the exception of Torts which now has a cap of 30 students per workshop. This returns all classes for Law to their position before the cuts.
Slide 4:
We've secured additional wins, including capping group assessment weighting at 30% and membership to a maximum of five students to a group.
Today's announcement ends a saga that demonstrates that student advocacy works, and that it is still possible to stand up to the University.
Despite being told time and time again that it was not possible, we did not stop, and have continued to fight for a complete restoration, which has now been achieved.
Only Student advocacy can deliver what we were told couldn't be done.
