Teaching Info

I’m available Mondays and Wednesdays 5:30pm – 9:30pm. My preference is Wednesday. I can travel to you on other days for an extra $20.

My approach is practical, encouraging and tailored to the individual. In the first lesson, we’ll play together and talk about what you enjoy, what you would like to achieve, and the areas that will make the biggest difference to your playing.

For beginners, lessons establish solid foundations: posture, breathing, embouchure, tone production, reading music, rhythm and the joy of playing music early on. I like to work with the Mark Walton method books ‘Off to a Great Start’.

For more experienced students, we can develop technical fluency, sound, phrasing, repertoire, aural skills, harmony, improvisation and confidence in performance.

Jazz improvisation is a particular passion of mine. I help students build an understanding of melody, harmony, rhythm and form, while developing the listening skills needed to play freely and expressively. This may involve learning tunes by ear, transcribing and adapting solos, exploring rhythmic ideas, or finding practical ways to connect theory with what you hear and play.

I also support students preparing for AMEB exams, VCE Music, auditions, performances and tertiary study. For students interested in playing professionally, I’m happy to share practical insight into ensemble playing, recording, writing and arranging, rehearsal preparation, and building a sustainable musical life.

Lessons are tailored to the student’s goals, whether that means learning great songs, developing a beautiful sound with solid technique, preparing for an exam or audition, or going deeper into jazz improvisation and creative music-making. I’m happy to schedule lessons weekly or bi-weekly depending on the student’s needs.

Above all, I want lessons to be musically engaging, appropriately challenging, and something students look forward to each time!

Looking for Violin Lessons | Artist development, Aural Lessons, Song Writing Workshops, Theory Lessons, Composition Lessons, Jazz Improvisation Lessons, Mixing and Mastering Lessons, Skype Lessons in 6 Austin Street, Preston VIC, Australia, Hargraves Street, Castlemaine VIC, Australia?

Get in touch with Alex Taylor – Violin Teacher

https://melbourne-musicteachers.com/alex-taylor-violin-teacher/

Bio

I began teaching in my third year of University in 1997 when I helped my student prepare for her successful audition into the Bachelor of Music course for the University of Southern Queensland. After graduating I moved to the UK and started teaching privately, as well as playing music for weddings, bands and theatre companies.

I moved back to Melbourne, Australia early 2020 and now teach students learning Classical, Folk and Jazz. During the Melbourne lockdown I completed a solo album of Eastern European folk songs mixed with electronic beats and bass for a new project called: ‘Vampire Pumpkins & Watermelons’ which I look forward to performing live. I also recently formed a gypsy jazz group called ‘Tiger Jam’ and a weddings/function band playing old style jazz ballads.

I am a very friendly and easy going person and have adopted a relaxed yet goal-oriented approach to teaching that can reach the highest standards. I believe the more comfortable a student is during a lesson the better the musical results!

Teaching Info

Learn Folk / Gypsy Jazz
Folk and Gypsy Jazz have a different energy to classical—they’re looser, more rhythmic, and focused more on feel than perfection. You’ll use less vibrato, more bounce in the bow, and plenty of ornamentation to bring the music to life. It’s about groove, not polish—learning to phrase naturally, lock into rhythm, and tell a story through the melody. In Gypsy Jazz, improvisation is key. Once you understand the chord progression, you can build solos that fit the harmony while still expressing your own voice. It’s all about creating your sound—with flair, clarity, and freedom.

Classical For All Ages
Classical training builds the foundation for all great playing—pitch, rhythm, tone, and expressive control. In lessons, we focus on strong technique and musical interpretation. It’s not about playing like a robot, but using phrasing, bowing, vibrato, and timing to bring the music to life.If you’re aiming to sit AMEB exams, I’ll make sure you’re properly prepared—my students consistently get strong results. I also help students prepare for university auditions, including mock performances and private concerts with a professional accompanist when needed.

Looking for Electronic Dance Music Production Lessons, Violin Lessons | Song Writing Workshops in Brunswick VIC 3056, Australia?

Get in touch with Imogen Jones

https://melbourne-musicteachers.com/imogen-jones/

Bio

I learned violin from some of the greatest teachers in Australia, Goetz Richter and Felicity Tsai, both of whom are members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and co-ordinators / professors at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. With regimented practice routines, AMEB exams & years spent in youth orchestras, Felicity worked me towards securing a place at the highly selective Sydney Conservatorium of Music High School. From there I was handed over to Goetz, a master of violin technique and pedagogy, who refined my playing to AMEB AMusA level.

All was in place for me to pursue a career in classical music, however – when I was 15 I discovered my love for songwriting. After learning I could run violin through looping pedals, I became fiercely enamoured with learning electronic music production.

I put my first few demos on Soundcloud under the moniker Lupa J and – to my total bewilderment – was immediately discovered & praised by an array of international music publications. I went on to be nominated as a finalist in Triple J’s Unearthed High competition for an unprecedented two years running, and by the time I graduated high school in 2015 had signed with a booking agency who secured me support slots on national tours with the likes of Grimes, Sarah Blasko, Tegan and Sara & Alice Glass.

I completed my violin studies with high distinctions at the Conservatorium and composed a contemporary classical piece that was selected to be performed at Encore at the Opera House, but chose to put everything into Lupa J project from that point onwards. I’ve never stopped performing with violin – I just now run it through delay, reverb, & distortion pedals.

Since 2017, I’ve run electronic production workshops for the likes of Ableton, Box Hill Institute, Darebin Youth Centre, Music NSW and New Age Noise Collective. I’m passionate about making electronic music more accessible for women, q***r and trans people.

I’ve been teaching violin privately for 2.5 years, and feel enraptured by the possibilities of nurturing a relationship between student and instrument that is rewarding, fun, and most importantly: guided by the student.

Teaching Info

I teach violin to anyone of any age – it’s never too late to start!

My focus is on building healthy, sustainable technical foundations & a positive emotional relationship with the instrument – the primary instrument in violin playing is the mind & body. As I learned from the Alexander-technique informed teaching of Goetz Richter, great violin playing is made possible by eliminating stress and tension physically and psychologically.

I believe it’s important to let the student’s goals inform my teaching method – there is no singular correct approach. While building a foundation, I generally teach from the AMEB technical workbooks, with the option to participate in exams – but if a student would prefer a more casual approach to learning violin, or would like to focus on other styles, I can absolutely offer flexible, alternative approaches to teaching. As someone who uses violin in experimental ways in contemporary pop / electronic music, I’m open to anything – not to mention, I’d happily share my knowledge in running violin through looping & effects pedals any day!

Some student reviews,

Max Crosby-

“Onur Puza has been of a great positive influence on my endeavours on guitar. Our first lesson was met with immediate enthusiasm and a genuine willingness to guide me in my pursuit of jazz guitar. I can say without a doubt that my knowledge of guitar has improved exponentially since I first started studying with him last year during lockdown via zoom.

Onur cleverly and cautiously plans each lesson in such a way that is fresh and challenging, yet his continued positivity and innovative approach to guitar makes such hurdles an easy tackle. I implore anyone looking to study guitar at whatever level to study with Onur as he has been one of the most positive and inspiring influences for me on my music journey”.

Adam Sullivan-

“Onur has a deep understanding of technique and theory… and more importantly how they should be combined and applied. Our son has improved vastly since studying with Onur in both his comprehension and his technical ability.

We highly recommend him to anyone interested in either beginning their journey or advancing their current proficiency”.

Nic Burkhardt-

“I have been taking weekly lessons with Onur for a little over a year now. I am a mature age student and was not much more advanced than a beginner when I commenced lessons. I feel that with me, Onur tailored his teaching approach to take into account my age and relatively limited musical experience. The result is that I have not just maintained the momentum that initially brought me to him, my enthusiasm has in fact increased exponentially I find myself practising every day and craving even more time to practise.

I can see that if I continue to follow his guidance, I can reach a level over the next couple of years where I will have attained sufficient chops to be playing in public and enjoying serious jamming.

I would not hesitate to recommend him to students who feel they may be at a similar stage to where I was at or I am at now”.e
