Reading Out of Poverty Who we're looking to help:
We have found that ownership of books within disadvantaged families is very low.

We are an Australian not-for-profit organisation that provides opportunities for children from disadvantaged communities to engage in reading and early literacy activities. What we do:
• Provide early intervention literacy programs that are designed to promote higher levels of reading to children.
• Work with established community groups to give books to children and promote reading out loud
• Edu

cate parents and caregivers on the importance of reading with children. This is done through mentoring, promoting educational strategies and providing helpful hints to ensure their child develops a love for reading and has the pre-literacy skills necessary to succeed at school. Key activities:
• Intervention literacy programs
• Book give away
• Reading out loud
• Guest storytellers
• Celebrity storytellers
• Educating parents and organisations
• Pop up libraries
• Give away packs (pencils and books)
• Advocacy to raise awareness around child literacy

Why we do it:
The most rapid development of a child's brain occurs in the first 5 years of life, and this is when their potential for learning is at its highest level. Research has found that children who grow up with limited exposure to reading and literacy activities in their early childhood years will start school without the required level of basic literacy skills. As a result, children who are not read to from birth have been found to have a lower foundation of language, literacy skills and an impeded readiness necessary to learn and read at a primary school level. In turn, studies show that these children show much higher rates and instances of reading delays, school failure, and school dropouts. Over time, this contributes to the intergenerational cycle of poverty.

Early literacy doesn’t begin when a child picks up a book or starts recognizing letters. It begins much earlier in everyday conversations, in songs and stories, in playful back‑and‑forth moments with caring adults. Every new word, every curious question, every retold story helps children build the strong language foundations they need to thrive.

That’s the heart of our Books from Birth initiative. We provide free literacy packs and practical parent resources, delivered through trusted health professionals. Many of the families we support have few or no books at home, have never visited a library, and often feel disconnected from local parent groups or playgroups.

By reaching new parents early, especially those facing socioeconomic disadvantage, we’re helping ensure every child begins life with the language, stories, and support they need to grow, learn, and flourish.
