📚Our Share a Book Library is still going strong!📚

It’s hard to believe our little “Share a Book Library” has been outside our centre for almost a year now! What started as a simple way to share the joy of books with our community has become something our children and families continue to love. 🥰

We love seeing little hands choosing a new story to take home, families stopping by for a browse, and books finding their way into new homes where they can be enjoyed all over again. 📖

Our Share a Book Library is open to everyone in our community, so if you’re passing by, please feel welcome to stop in, have a look and take a book. And if you have children’s books you’d like to donate, you’re more than welcome to pop them in too! 💕

Because every child deserves the opportunity to discover the magic of a good book. 📚

🌟 MEET BREANNAN! 🌟

We’re so lucky to have Breannan as part of our Goodstart Mooroolbark family! 💛

Breannan holds her Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care and works with us Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday as a Support Educator across all four of our rooms.

Having been part of our service for many years, Breannan has built beautiful relationships with children across the centre. 💕 She loves being able to spend time in each room, getting to know the children, supporting their learning and being a familiar and caring face for so many of our families.

When Breannan isn’t at Goodstart, she loves spending time with her family and friends and cheering on her beloved Hawks in the AFL!

🐢 Turtle Learning in Kinder 1! 🐢

Our Kinder 1 children have been diving deeper into their ongoing interest in the ocean, with a special focus on sea turtles and their life cycle!

Together, we explored how a mother turtle lays her eggs in a nest in the sand, how the baby turtles (hatchlings!) emerge from their eggs, and how they make their journey across the sand to the ocean.

The children then brought their learning to life through hands-on, imaginative play using our mother turtle, eggs, sand, ocean and hatchlings. It was wonderful to hear them confidently using new vocabulary such as nest, hatchling, ocean, sea, flippers and shell, while sharing their ideas and explaining what happens at each stage of the turtle's life cycle.

Experiences like this build on children's interests while supporting curiosity, scientific thinking, oral language, new vocabulary and sustained shared thinking.

We finished by asking the children, “I wonder what you can see?” (showing them a photo of some eggs in the sand) and loved hearing all of their observations and ideas!

We can't wait to see where our ocean investigation takes us next!

🏃‍♀️🌳 Kinder 2 went on an adventure today! 🌳🏃‍♂️

Today our Kinder 2 children headed off on a walking excursion to check out the oval where they'll be taking part in our upcoming Sports Kinder sessions!

Along the way, we spotted all sorts of vehicles, practised our road safety skills, thanked the drivers who stopped for us at the crossing, and enjoyed a well-earned rest at the oval while chatting about everything we had seen. We even met lots of friendly dogs out for their morning walks!

The children showed fantastic listening, teamwork and safe walking skills throughout the excursion. We are so proud of them and can't wait to kick off the Sports Kinder program.

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.

💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.

💛 Experience connection, comfort and joy
Shared reading fosters calmness, closeness, and moments of joint attention. These warm interactions support a child's sense of security and belonging.

Most importantly, children who experience positive, engaging reading moments from a young age are more likely to develop a genuine love of books - something that matters even more than early literacy skills alone.

Reading is simple, joyful, and sets children up for success in school and life.

💙 We're Supporting National Pyjama Day!💤

On Friday 24th July, the children and educators at Goodstart Early Learning Mooroolbark will be swapping their uniforms for their favourite pyjamas as we take part in National Pyjama Day in support of The Pyjama Foundation.

National Pyjama Day is about raising awareness and funds for children living in foster care. Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, feel supported and reach their full potential. Funds raised help The Pyjama Foundation provide educational resources, learning support and positive mentoring relationships for more than 1,200 children in foster care across Australia.

If you'd like to support this incredible cause, you can donate through our fundraising page or make a gold coin donation at our service on the day.
