Every child and young person deserves to be engaged in education and experience the joy of learning.
As we discover more about the diverse ways in which children learn, think and experience the world, many parents and educators are rethinking the way we approach schooling.
North-Eastern Montessori School principal Sue Colacino took part in the Herald Sun's 'Educating Diverse Minds' discussion late last year as part of the publication's 'A Neurodivergent Generation β Unpacked' series. Although speaking in her role as Deputy Principal of Saints College in Fitzroy North at the time, the theme has played a central role in Sue's career, with a professional background deeply grounded in inclusive education and neuro-affirming practices.
The Montessori philosophy's natural alignment with this perspective drew Sue to her current role at North-Eastern Montessori School: "Montessori education places the individual child at the centre of the learning process, recognising that children learn best when they are respected as capable individuals, given a voice in their learning and offered opportunities to develop independence within a supportive environment."

πΏ Fresh air, connecting with nature, freedom of movement... What's not to love about working outside?
In a Montessori classroom, learning doesnβt stop at the door. Our indoor and outdoor spaces flow together so children can move freely between them, allowing them to choose where they work, explore and discover.
Our Cycle 2 (6-9 yrs) classes have been making the most of the new awnings installed on their classrooms during summer holidays, giving students more opportunity to enjoy the benefits of outdoor learning.
