North-Eastern Montessori School principal Sue Colacino took part in the Herald Sun's 'Educating Diverse Minds' discussion late last year as part of the publication's 'A Neurodivergent Generation — Unpacked' series. Although speaking in her role as Deputy Principal of Saints College in Fitzroy North at the time, the theme has played a central role in Sue's career, with a professional background deeply grounded in inclusive education and neuro-affirming practices.

The Montessori philosophy's natural alignment with this perspective drew Sue to her current role at North-Eastern Montessori School: "Montessori education places the individual child at the centre of the learning process, recognising that children learn best when they are respected as capable individuals, given a voice in their learning and offered opportunities to develop independence within a supportive environment."

In a Montessori classroom, learning doesn’t stop at the door. Our indoor and outdoor spaces flow together so children can move freely between them, allowing them to choose where they work, explore and discover.

Our Cycle 2 (6-9 yrs) classes have been making the most of the new awnings installed on their classrooms during summer holidays, giving students more opportunity to enjoy the benefits of outdoor learning.

Captured on a peaceful Friday morning, our 2 year old baker was deeply engaged as she worked independently to measure, pour, sprinkle and mix ingredients for bread dough before enjoying a moment of connection with her teacher as they worked alongside each other to knead and shape the loaves.

🌱 We’re delighted to welcome Susan Colacino as the new Principal of North‑Eastern Montessori School.

Sue's holistic approach to education along with her extensive educational leadership experience in Australia and overseas made her a natural choice to lead our school as we enter an exciting new chapter with the launch of our lower secondary Middle Years program.

Starting in true Montessori style, Sue has spent her first weeks as Principal quietly observing in each classroom, absorbing the Montessori philosophy and developing an understanding of the North-Eastern culture and community.
