Young Road Users - Fit to Drive Sessions
The Fit To Drive (F2D) road safety education programs involves a partnership approach between REM, local municipalities, TAC , Victoria Police, DEECD, RACV, MFB and CFA. The F2D program educates secondary school students on road safety issues including: 120 hours driving practice, through the VicRoads ‘Key Please’ program targeted at Year 10 students and parents; Peer pressure and the risk taking behaviour, through half day Workshop and Youth Discussion Groups target at Year 11 students; Not drinking and driving through Looking After Your Mates target at Year 11 and 12 students; and Risk taking behaviour, through the “Much Up Day” video targeted at Year 12 students. Older Road Users - Wiser Walker Program
Pedestrians are the most vulnerable of road users due to the lack of physical protection that is afforded compared to others such as motorists and public transport users. The Wiser Walker program is a pedestrian safety program designed to empower older pedestrians with the skills to use the roads wisely. A display stand is erected in a prominent position within the shopping centres and local libraries with the purpose of educating passerby’s on pedestrian safety. Wiser Driver Seminar
The Wiser Driver seminar, developed by Hawthorn Community Education Project, provides older drivers with the advice about the effects of various types of impairment on driving ability, such as the effects of medication, fatigue, alcohol and poor eyesight and aims to improve safety for older drivers in the local community by providing information on safer vehicles and planning for future mobility needs. Keeping Safe and Mobile Seminar
The Keeping Safe and Mobile seminar is a highly successful seminar delivered in partnership with the TAC, RACV and councils. The seminar informs older drivers on the impacts that ageing can have on driving. It also provides an opportunity to explore and understand options for semi-retirement or complete retirement from driving. The seminar is a natural progression for the elderly wanting more information following on from the Wiser Driver seminar. Both seminars allow individuals to make an informed decision about their own driving future.
Vulnerable Road Users - BikeEd for Teachers
BikeEd aims to provide primary school students with the information and experience required to be confident and safe cyclists. Roadsafe Eastern Metro continues to support community education on safe bicycle riding behaviour, particularly programs targeting school aged children and community riders. In partnership with the local municipalities, RoadSafe Eastern Metro encourages primary school teachers to be trained in bicycle education and coordinate community bicycle safety intiatives, targeting all audiences including adult riders. Teachers or schools within the RoadSafe Eastern Metro municipalities interested in undertaking BikeEd funded by our group are encouraged to contact us via email [email protected]
Vehicle Safety - Child Restraint Fittings
New legislation was introduced in Victoria in 2009 relating to child restraints. The aim of the legislation is to protect our youngest passangers by ensuring they are seated within restraints that are appropriate to their age, height and weight. The population within the RoadSafe Eastern Metro municipalities is projected to grow with the number of infants and children not expected to fail, resulting in the need for continuing investment in services and programs for young children and their parents. Many of the restraints checked at previous days are found to be incorrectly fitted. Major concerns have been the incorrect selection of capsule, car seat or booster seat for different children, and the poor installation or adjustment of these, as well as finding that some drivers were not using any child restraints for their child passengers.
