Big change for Australia’s gig economy. šŸ’µ

From today, 17 August 2026, food and grocery delivery workers covered by the new Fair Work Commission standards will have a minimum pay floor of around $31.30–$32 per hour during ā€œengaged timeā€, the period from accepting a delivery through to completing it.

That’s a significant shift for workers who have historically faced unpredictable earnings and limited workplace protections.

The new standards also include:
āœ… Minimum earnings protections
āœ… Personal accident insurance
āœ… New dispute resolution processes
āœ… Greater representation rights
āœ… Further pay increases planned for 2027

And importantly, this isn’t simply about paying more. It’s about recognising that gig workers deserve a safety net too.

Australia’s National Minimum Wage is currently $26.44 an hour, making the new delivery-worker rate substantially higher. (Fair Work Ombudsman)

But there’s an important catch: the minimum applies to engaged time, not necessarily every minute a driver is logged into an app waiting for an order.

So… is this the beginning of a fairer gig economy, or does it still leave too many gaps?

What do you think? šŸ‘‡
