Ever had one of those "What should I be doing with my child?" moments? You might already have the answer at home.

Earlier this year, every Goodstart family received a What & When for Families guide for each child. If it's been tucked away in a drawer since then, now might be the perfect time to pull it back out.

The guide is packed with simple, play-based activities that support your child's learning and development at home. Best of all, it's written in your child's voice, with ideas tailored to their age and developmental stage.

From singing songs with babies and playing peek-a-boo, to "I Spy" games, storytelling and treasure hunts with older children, the activities are designed to fit naturally into everyday moments you already share together.

We know learning doesn't only happen in the classroom. Those small moments at home can help build big communication, language and literacy skills.

At Goodstart, we go beyond the minimum requirements when it comes to children’s safety and wellbeing.

While regulations require a certain number of educators on site to hold First Aid, CPR and Emergency Asthma and Anaphylaxis qualifications, every educator at our centre maintains current First Aid certification.

This means that no matter where children are learning, playing or exploring, there is always a trained educator ready to respond in an emergency. We believe that every moment matters, and every child deserves the highest level of care and protection.

Because keeping children safe is everyone’s responsibility. 💛

The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.

When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.

Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:

Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.

💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.

It was a pleasure to welcome Parkmore Primary School to our Kinder Information Night. We had a meaningful discussion with the families towards school readiness and support smooth transition to school.

We also introduced our kindergarten program which focused on our combined 3 years old kinder and 4 years old kinder and how we designed our program to cater our children’s needs through play and intentional teaching.

A big thank you to Parkmore Primary School for partnering with us, and to all the families who joined us. We look forward to continuing to work together to support every child’s learning journey.

This week, during our Educator Network Meeting, our team participated in a Traffic Light Reflection activity, exploring different strategies to support children during orientation and transition.

Green Light – Practices that support a positive transition.
Yellow Light – Strategies that may be helpful depending on the child and the situation.
Red Light – Practices that may make the transition more challenging.

Each educator was given two strategies to place under the traffic light they believed best reflected the practice. This sparked meaningful discussions as we shared our perspectives, reflected on the reasoning behind our choices, and considered how different approaches can impact children’s sense of safety, belonging, and wellbeing.

Through collaborative reflection, we continue to strengthen our practice and ensure every child experiences a positive and supported start to their learning journey.

During our educator networking meeting, our team enjoyed two fun communication challenges “Back-to-Back Drawing” and the “Whisper Challenge” . These activities reminded us that effective communication is more than just speaking; it involves active listening, asking clarifying questions, and working together with trust and patience.

By laughing, learning, and reflecting together, we strengthened our teamwork and discovered how clear communication helps us create the best outcomes for each other, and ultimately for the children and families we support.
