๐Ÿ’™ Asthma Week 2026: Why asthma affects women differently ๐Ÿ’™

Did you know that one in five Australian women lives with asthma, and women are twice as likely to die from asthma as men?

This Asthma Week, 1โ€“7 September, Asthma Australia is shining a light on the impact of asthma on women and girls, and why their experiences deserve greater attention.

Asthma can change at different stages of life:

๐Ÿฉต Childhood: Around 5,000 girls are hospitalised with asthma each year.

๐Ÿฉต Teenage years: After puberty, asthma becomes more common in girls than boys. From age 15, girls and women are hospitalised at around twice the rate of boys and men.

๐Ÿฉต Pregnancy: Hormonal changes can affect asthma symptoms, making regular reviews and an up-to-date Asthma Action Plan particularly important.

๐Ÿฉต Perimenopause and menopause: Changes in hormones can influence lung health and make symptoms more difficult to manage.

๐Ÿฉต Older age: Women aged 75 and over account for nearly half of all asthma deaths.

Many women push through symptoms because life is busy, but waking at night with asthma, experiencing symptoms more than twice a week or avoiding activities because of breathing difficulties are signs that an asthma review may be needed.

As a leading provider of first aid training, Premium Health knows that understanding asthma and recognising when someone needs help can make a meaningful difference.

This Asthma Week, start the conversation, check in with the women around you and make sure you know how to respond to an asthma emergency.

๐ŸŒธ Spring has sprung, and so have the allergies! ๐Ÿคง

Spring brings warmer days, blooming flowers and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Unfortunately, it also brings increased exposure to pollen and other seasonal allergens.

Common spring allergy symptoms can include:

๐Ÿคง Sneezing and a runny or blocked nose.
๐Ÿ‘€ Itchy, watery or swollen eyes.
๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ Coughing, wheezing or worsening asthma symptoms.
๐ŸŒฟ Increased sensitivity to pollen and other outdoor allergens.

For people living with asthma, exposure to springtime triggers can make breathing more difficult and increase the likelihood of a flare-up. Insect stings can also pose serious risks for people with severe allergies.

A little preparation can help: keep prescribed medication accessible, review relevant action plans and speak with a healthcare professional if symptoms worsen or become difficult to manage.

As a leading provider of First Aid and CPR training, Premium Health knows the importance of recognising when a situation needs more than tissues and antihistamines.

Knowing how to respond to an asthma emergency or severe allergic reaction can make a real difference at home, at work or in the community.

A psychologically safe workplace isn't one where everyone agrees all the time. It's one where people feel safe enough to speak up when they disagree, ask for help, admit mistakes and raise concerns.

๐Ÿง  So, what can leaders actually do?

1. Make speaking up normal
Don't only ask for feedback when something goes wrong. Make questions, suggestions and concerns part of everyday conversations.

2. Respond โ€” don't just listen
If someone raises a concern and nothing happens, they'll be less likely to speak up again. Acknowledge concerns, explain what can be done and follow through.

3. Show that wellbeing matters through your actions
Leaders set the tone. How you communicate, respond under pressure, handle mistakes and respect boundaries tells your team what behaviour is really valued.

And importantly, psychological safety isn't about removing accountability or avoiding difficult conversations.

It's about creating an environment where people can have those conversations respectfully and constructively.

The cost of inadequate training isn't just financial ๐Ÿ’ฐ.

It shows up in:
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ participant safety
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ when workers aren't confident enough to respond properly.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ staff confidence, when hesitation costs precious time.
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ reputation, when incidents become public knowledge.

And it shows up in compliance, when records can't prove what your team can actually do.

Proper training protects more than your budget. It protects your people.

Mental health training is becoming a workplace expectation ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ.

Employers are increasingly expected to support mentally healthy workplaces through education, awareness and proper risk management, and without the right training, leaders and staff can struggle to spot the warning signs or respond the right way.

At Premium Health, our programs are practical, operationally focused and delivered by experienced facilitators, with flexible options to suit your team.

Build this capability across your workplace, wherever your team is based.

Would your team recognise a stroke?

Stroke can happen suddenly, anywhere, with little warning. The key signs to watch for:

๐ŸŸฆ Face โ€“ drooping on one side

๐ŸŸฆ Arms โ€“ weakness or drift in one arm

๐ŸŸฆ Speech โ€“ slurred or difficult to understand

๐ŸŸฆ Time โ€“ call emergency services immediately and note when symptoms started

Fast recognition changes outcomes. Delays can mean serious, long-term consequences.

We train teams to recognise the signs and respond quickly, with real scenarios and trainers who bring genuine clinical experience.
