As Australia marks National Reconciliation Week and the AIATSIS Summit 2026, our researchers are contributing to important conversations about truth-telling, healing and Indigenous-led futures.

One of those voices is Jesse Fleay, whose latest article explores why truth-telling processes must be grounded in First Nations leadership to create meaningful change.

Monash researchers are also presenting work on access to records for Stolen Generations survivors, and on cultural fire practices and community wellbeing.

Yesterday, researchers, clinicians, policymakers and health sector leaders came together for the Monash Women and Children’s Health Research Summit 2026.

Hosted by Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and Health through the Monash Health Translation Precinct, the summit highlighted research helping improve prevention, diagnosis and care across women’s and children’s health.

Discussions focused on some of the most significant and fast-moving areas in health research today – including endometriosis and pelvic pain, menopause, metabolic health, reproductive health, autism and ADHD.

Across the precinct, researchers and clinicians are contributing to advances that are shaping healthcare, informing policy and improving outcomes for women, children and families in Australia and around the world.

Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation and shared their expertise.

Today we gathered as a community to mark National Sorry Day – a time to pause and reflect on the profound harm caused by the forced removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families and communities, now known as the Stolen Generations.

As National Reconciliation Week begins, this year’s theme – “All In” – calls on every Australian to support reconciliation through both intention and action. It’s a powerful reminder that reconciliation is not passive; it requires all of us to engage, to listen deeply and to contribute to meaningful change.

We’ll observe National Reconciliation Week from Wednesday 27 May to Wednesday 3 June. This important period offers our staff, students and broader community an opportunity to deepen understanding of our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to reflect on the role each of us can play in advancing reconciliation.

There’s a fascinating difference between the physical need to eat and the neurological desire for reward.

In our upcoming webinar, Professor Zane Andrews will unpack the intense, ongoing dialogue between the brain and the gut. Designed for Monash alumni, this session explores how your internal systems use continuous feedback loops to control body weight and why our brains specifically promote the overconsumption of highly palatable foods.

Want to understand the science of your appetite? Register for our free session.

Bees are small, but the systems they support are enormous 🐝

From crop production to biodiversity, pollinators play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems — and researchers are finding new ways technology could help us better understand and protect them.

projects combining AI, robotics and computer vision are helping track pollination activity and model how bees move through different environments.

The goal: better outcomes for both agriculture and biodiversity 🧑‍🌾

Indigenous communities hold deep knowledge about disaster recovery, resilience and Caring for Country.
Earlier this month, the National Indigenous Disaster Resilience Gathering 2026 – a Monash Arts program – brought together Indigenous leaders, researchers and practitioners on Gunaikurnai Country in East Gippsland to share knowledge, strengthen connections and discuss Indigenous-led approaches to disaster preparedness and recovery.
The Gathering highlighted the importance of listening to and learning from communities when building systems designed to support people before, during and after disasters: https://www.monash.edu/arts/social-sciences/national-indigenous-disaster-resilience/news-and-events/news/2026/nidr-gathering-2026-coming-together-with-indigenous-leaders-to-build-a-disaster-system-that-works-for-everyone

An exclusive event for our Monash alumni: Join Professor Zane Andrews as he breaks down the science of Health, weight and metabolism in our next webinar. We’re looking past the hype to explore how neural circuits control our appetite, why our food reward pathways are so easily hijacked, and what GLP-1 drugs actually reveal about the human brain.

If we ever make contact with extraterrestrial life, communication won’t be simple. 👽

With no shared language, and vast distances between stars, scientists are exploring what could act as a universal bridge.

One idea? Mathematics.

Research shows that even species as different as humans and honeybees can understand basic numerical concepts. And that raises a bigger question: Is maths something we invented...or something all intelligent life might share? 🐝

Monash alumna Yen Siow’s story is nothing short of extraordinary. At just four years old, she spent five days adrift on a leaking boat fleeing Vietnam before being rescued and resettled in Australia.

That experience didn’t hold her back – it fuelled her. Today, Yen is a changemaker providing STEM education to displaced learners across ASEAN countries, building pathways for Afghan, Pakistani, Rohingya and other marginalised communities to access skills, dignity and opportunity.

Yen’s story shows why supporting students from ASEAN countries is important. When young people with resilience, talent and lived experience are given opportunity, they don’t just transform their own futures – they uplift entire communities.

Monash University is championing this belief through the new Vice-Chancellor’s ASEAN Awards – a landmark $2.5M initiative supporting 67 students from 10 ASEAN nations to study, grow and lead.

Yen captures it perfectly: “Education gives people choices, dignity and confidence. I’ve seen how a single opportunity can change the direction of a young person’s life.”
