Applications are NOW OPEN for season 2 of Toolkits 2026!

Express Media rounds out this year’s Toolkits program, presenting three streams: 
~ Nonfiction with Izzy Greenslade
~ Poetry with lou garcia-dolnik
~ Digital Storytelling with ariessszz

Over 12 weeks, you'll develop and expand your craft alongside a cohort of other young writers in weekly online sessions, guided by your facilitator. Explore what makes a nonfiction piece tick, experiment with poetic potentials or whirr away at digital storytelling. If you're a writer or artist under 30, we want to hear from you. 🌟

Ding! One new notification... It's us, thrilled to announce Aries M. Gacutan as Voiceworks Online editor 🌐🛜

Aries M. Gacutan is a poet and digital creator working on the traditional lands of the Woiwurrung and Boonwurrung people of the Kulin nation. They also do a bunch of other artsy things for money. They often write about space/place, migrant identity and digital ephemerality. They were a recipient of the Emerging Poets Residency with Red Room Poetry in 2024, and currently facilitate Toolkits: Digital Storytelling with Express Media. Aries will lead the fabulous team of Voiceworks Online Edcommers, bringing their digital expertise to shape the next era of Voiceworks Online.

This year, the team at Voiceworks and Express Media was happy to partner with UNSW Arts, Design, and Architecture Society - ADASoc for the ADAsoc Creative Tournament (ACT) — Storytelling Competition. The competition was judged in part by Voiceworks edcommer Faye Tang, with categories for fiction and poetry.

The two winners are:
~ Fiction: Tara Chau, 3rd year Bachelor of Arts (major in Creative Writing)
~ Poetry: Ashlee Amer, 2nd year Bachelor of Arts (double major in Sociology and English) and Education (Secondary)

Have you stepped into any portals lately? 🪞

Express Media, in partnership with , is proud to present the next round of Little Stories, Big Ideas: a flash writing competition for Australian secondary school-aged students across the nation.

This competition's theme is: PORTAL.

Entrants write to a themed prompt in 100 words or less, in any literary style. Anything is welcome – prose, poetry, comics, song lyrics, or whatever else you love writing! Entries can include writing for readers of any age.  The competition runs twice a year, and entry is free.

Winners will be chosen from two categories: Years 7—9, and Years 10—12.

The winner and runner-up in each category will receive:
— An online writing masterclass with this year's prize ambassador, children’s author Amelia Mellor
— A Voiceworks Magazine bundle courtesy of Express Media
— A YA book pack courtesy of The Wheeler Centre
— Names published in Voiceworks, Australia's premier youth literary journal

The prize winner in each category will also receive a $250 cash prize.

Entries close at 11:59PM AEST Sunday 11th October.

Express Media and The Wheeler Centre are excited to announce the winners of the Little Stories, Big Ideas writing competition in the theme of ‘Shimmer’! 🪸

HUGE congratulations to:

🌟 Years 7-9 Winner: Abigail Koh (WA, Year 9) for 'marmöris’
🌟 Years 7-9 Runner-up: Ethan Cheng (NSW, Year 8) for ‘my last meal with you.’
🌟 Years 10-12 Winner: Jessica Zhen (NSW, Year 12) for ‘Fruit Flies’
🌟 Years 10-12 Runner-up: Olivia Yun (NSW, Year 10) for ‘was i Beautiful?’

This round, we received an incredible calibre of flash writing entries from secondary school-aged writers across Australia. The winners and runners-up—chosen in collaboration with Prize Ambassador Amelia Mellor—impressed us deeply with their unique voices and perspectives.

Each winner also receives $250, and each winner and runner-up will receive a book pack courtesy of The Wheeler Centre, a mentoring session with Prize Ambassador Amelia Mellor, and an announcement printed in Voiceworks, Australia’s premier youth literary journal.
