Would you prefer a sea change or a tree change?

This was one of the fun impromptu speech opportunities/Table Topics given at Carlton Toastmasters during the month of November.

Some additional highlights from our prepared speeches were:
• Jol gave an informative speech on different styles of public speaking and how you can translate your skills gained at Toastmasters into real world scenarios like running a panel discussion.
• Michael dove deep into planning and infrastructure challenges with a three step plan to improve our housing crisis.
• Rachel reflected on how best to engage new members to complete stages of the Toastmasters educational program 'Pathways', with a key message of 'keep it simple'.

October was a productive month for Carlton Toastmasters with several captivating speeches:

• Michael gave a master class in storytelling. To celebrate 50 years of the iconic Rocky Horror Picture Show, he broke down the theme into stages of the Hero’s Journey.
• Clayton challenged us to remain calm in the face of adversity.
• Christine reminded us of the joys of finding your voice with ‘sing sing’.
• Jol gave a humorous take on a ghostly board meeting. How many vampires do you have lurking in your scary audit committee?
• Rachel still managed to find some dark humour in the midst of difficult news.
• Harriet reflected on lessons learnt from a challenging mentor.
• We had fun with a ‘ghost busting’ theme. How would you deal with a restless spirit? Would you arrange a ghost marriage or invite it to tea?

September was another fun-filled month at Carlton Toastmasters:

• Christine gave a hilarious speech titled ‘Gold’, which took us all back to the early days of lock down when toilet paper was a valuable commodity. That glorious mountain of hoarded toilet paper? Turns out it’s a menace. It dissolves on contact, clogs every drain, and basically declares war on your plumbing.
• Dimi gave a heartwarming account of his mission to become a superstar volley ball player, dancer, then finally a public speaker. We wish Dimi all the best for his upcoming speech contest.
• Michael kept us thoroughly entertained with his deck of cards used to select random Table Topics (impromptu speeches). If you were in a movie, would you rather be the main star or a background character?

August was an action packed month for Carlton Toastmasters:

• We had the privilege of a visit from our District Director, Laura, who gave a captivating speech titled ‘To motivate and inspire’.
• Jol gave a speech on his latest literary obsession ‘Juice’ by Tim Winton, a searing but essential look at Earth after the human-induced apocalypse. This led to some amusing apocalypse themed Table Topics (impromptu speeches). What skills and items will you bring to your survival bunker?
• Michael commenced another educational pathway with a speech on model railways. We look forward to hearing more about an epic track build in future!
• We had plenty of fun with an Alice in Wonderland theme for our second meeting of the month. Did you know the phrase ‘mad as a hatter’ originates from the days when hat makers got dementia from mercury used in curing felt?
• Harriet taught us more on how animators bring cartoon concepts to life, crafting our favourite stories.
• Rachel also gave a speech on the shock of receiving an unexpected birthday call.

What do you want to achieve in the upcoming Toastmasters year?

Every opportunity to give a prepared speech is an opportunity to receive some constructive feedback, and work on these points of improvement for your next speech.

July was a productive month for Carlton Toastmasters with several of our new and experienced members giving speeches. Some highlights for the month were:
• Clayton gave a powerful speech titled ‘Magical Powers’, on the benefits of mediation. He reminded us of the importance of emptying the mind and being truly present.
• Jol inspired us with ‘Leading your volunteer organisation’, to summarise the key learnings from his 2024/2025 role as President.
• Christine started a new pathway in our educational program with a speech comparing the benefits of electronic reading devices versus old school books.
• Rachel also commenced a new pathway in our education program with ‘Not Real’. A speech to remind ourselves not to be too serious and embrace story telling.
• Special mention goes to Huda, who gave the very first speech (also referred to as an icebreaker) in her Toastmasters journey. Huda gave a captivating account of her life in Eritrea, studying in Italy, then moving to Australia.
