Join us for an immersive Maracatu Masterclass led by Newton Peres, founder of Trovão UK — a lifelong percussionist raised in Recife, birthplace of Maracatu. With more than twenty carnivals behind him, Newton brings an authentic, lived understanding of Brazil’s street culture and Afro-diasporic rhythms.

Saturday 13 December 2025 from 10am until 12 noon.
All instruments provided.

100% of profits will be donated directly to a Maracatu group in Recife, helping them fund costumes, instruments, rehearsals, meals, and other essentials as they prepare for Carnaval.

The alfaia is a hand-crafted Brazilian drum, carved from wood and roped tight with animal skin. Its deep, thunderous sound is felt in every beat. Worn over the shoulder and played with heavy sticks, the alfaia is more than an instrument. It’s the tradition, pulse, and rhythm of Northeastern Brazil 🇧🇷.
